Overview
SUMMARY: Under supervision of the Manager Laboratory Outreach Services or guidance of the Lead Phlebotomist, performs responsibilities associated with obtaining blood and various other patient specimens in accordance with department procedures. Obtains samples ordered by physicians for routine and specialized tests on assigned unit. Takes samples from pediatric and adult patients on outpatient units. Transports specimens and completes basic records. Fosters patient- and family-centered care and nursing services in accordance with the Brown University Health and The Miriam Hospital’s mission, vision, values, and with consideration of the life span and cultural patterns. Responsibilities
Perform functions to assure proper collection and documentation of patient specimens, including patient registration, identification, verification, order entry, and medical necessity adherence.
Manage Advanced Beneficiary Notice (ABN/SN) with supporting diagnostic codes, patient signature, document management, and scanning.
Perform related clerical activities (e.g., medical necessity follow-up, filing, daily checklists, phones, report delivery, patient check-in) and monitor standing orders for expirations/renewals.
Provide patients with forms and instructions for tests and any special preparation; contact additional information to complete records as needed.
Schedule venipunctures or capillary punctures according to test priority, including timed studies; ensure collection meets procedures and container requirements.
Verify patient identity and preparation; notify nursing staff or supervisor of deviations or adverse conditions.
Collect other specimen types as needed (e.g., throat culture) and process samples (e.g., centrifugation, tracking).
Obtain samples for specialized tests (e.g., thyroid-releasing hormone, therapeutic drug monitoring, D-Xylose tolerance) and monitor dosing timing.
Label, wrap, and transport samples; maintain records of sample procurement; follow universal precautions and hospital policies.
Register patients and order tests; interview patients to obtain insurance, biographical, and medical information as required.
Provide patient contact to return or repeat tests when necessary; follow procedures for home sampling when applicable.
Minimum Qualifications
Education: High school diploma or GED; Phlebotomy certificate through NAACLS or completion of a Phlebotomy certificate program with a formal internship demonstrating 100 successful venipunctures. In lieu of internship, 6 months of phlebotomy experience may be considered. In lieu of certification, 5+ years direct phlebotomy experience may be considered.
Experience: Ability to perform venipuncture and capillary puncture on adults, children, and infants; strong interpersonal skills to explain procedures and alleviate patient anxiety; clerical skills to maintain records; familiarity with blood collection equipment, anticoagulants, and related procedures; ability to distinguish colors; a Phlebotomy certificate may be required.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements
Works in an inpatient care environment with considerable walking; some physical effort may be required with uncooperative patients.
Exposure to odors when handling specimens and potential exposure to communicable diseases; adherence to infection control procedures minimizes risk.
Manual dexterity to perform venipunctures.
