Overview
Phlebotomist Outreach PD role at Brown University Health and The Miriam Hospital’s mission, vision and values. Under supervision of the Manager Laboratory Outreach Services or guidance of the Lead Phlebotomist, performs responsibilities associated with obtaining blood and various other patient specimens in accordance with department procedures. Obtains samples ordered by physicians for routine and specialized tests on assigned units, including pediatric and adult patients on outpatient units. Transports specimens and completes basic records. Fosters patient and family centered care in alignment with the organization\'s mission and values, with consideration of the life span and cultural patterns. Responsibilities
Performs various functions associated with the computer system to ensure proper collection and documentation of patient specimens. Registers patients with accurate patient identification and verification, enters demographics and insurance information, orders tests, and manages related documentation in accordance with policies. Manages Advanced Beneficiary Notice (ABN/ASN), including obtaining supporting diagnostic codes, document review, patient signature, document management and scanning. Performs related clerical activities such as medical necessity follow-up, filing, daily checklists, answering phones, test result delivery, and patient intake into clinical settings. Maintains/monitors standing orders for expiration and renewals, ensuring tasks are completed. Provides patients with forms for tests and instructions for any special preparation prior to specimen collection; may contact patients to obtain additional information. Schedules venipunctures or capillary blood draws according to priority and test type; uses labels and Pathology Handbook references to ensure specimens meet collection requirements; adheres to hospital policy and universal precautions. Verifies patient identity and preparation prior to venipuncture; alerts staff to deviations or adverse conditions; may collect other specimen types and perform processing as needed. Obtains samples for specialized tests (e.g., thyroid stimulating hormone, therapeutic drug monitoring); may monitor patient reactions as assigned. May perform bleeding times and handles labeling, wrapping and transport of samples; keeps records of sample procurement. Performs duties according to hospital policy and universal precautions; engages in computer-based collection and documentation of patient specimens; may interview patients to obtain insurance and medical information for registration. All essential functions reflect the age-specific needs of patients; follows procedures for home specimen collection when applicable. Performs other duties as assigned. Education
High school diploma or GED required. Phlebotomy certification through the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences and/or completion of a Phlebotomy certificate program including an internship demonstrating 100 successful venipunctures. In lieu of internship, 6 months of phlebotomy experience may be considered. In lieu of certification, 5+ years of direct phlebotomy experience may be considered. Experience
Ability to perform venipuncture techniques and capillary puncture on adults, children and infants. Interpersonal skills to inform patients and explain procedures to alleviate fears and anxiety. Knowledge of caring for patients with consideration of aging processes, development and cultural patterns. Clerical skills to prepare and maintain records and reports, including keyboard/data entry skills. Familiarity with blood collection equipment, anticoagulants, and related precautions; ability to distinguish colors. A phlebotomy certificate is required. Work Environment and Physical Requirements
In-patient care environment with walking between units; may involve physical effort with uncooperative patients. Exposure to odors when handling specimens and potential exposure to communicable diseases with adherence to infection control procedures. Manual dexterity required for venipunctures.
