The Mechanical Engineer will be a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for mechanical packaging of electronic assemblies and rotating machine technologies critical to the success of the business. The position requires a technical background with strong communication skills capable of delivering technical results to a cross functional team. Relationships
Reports to Engineering Manager On a day-to-day basis interacts with Manufacturing, Test engineering, Marketing, Sales, Contracts, Purchasing, and Quality External relationships include customers & vendors Responsibilities
Mechanical package design for power electronics assemblies and rotating electric machines (generators and permanent magnet alternators) for aerospace, commercial, and military applications and associated equipment Define and conduct trade studies for feature and component selection Define requirements for mechanical packages Create models using a variety of modeling and simulation tools Develop new products, processes, and equipment with minimal supervision Identify and research technology as needed for optimized design solutions Provide leadership and mentoring to design engineers performing mechanical tasks Represent the company as a design professional in internal and external meetings and work directly with the customer to determine detailed requirements and deliverables Work within cross-functional teams to develop industry-leading products Perform thermal, shock, and vibration analysis to verify design concepts Create qualification test plans and write qualification test procedures for design verification Interpret test data and draw conclusions for qualification test reports about compliance to requirements Communicate clearly with internal and external customers Provide schedules and status during prototype development and qualification test phase Support Manufacturing during process development for new products Support Test Engineering during design verification and qualification testing Collaborate with Manufacturing to leverage and improve manufacturing process capabilities Prepare technical proposals for new business opportunities Provide support for new product recurring and non-recurring cost estimates using available estimating tools Support obsolescence process as a technical resource, selecting replacements and finding solutions Troubleshoot and perform root cause analysis with Sustaining Engineers and Manufacturing for existing products Regular, consistent and punctual attendance on-site is required. May need to work nights and weekends, variable schedule(s) and additional hours as necessary. A flexible schedule policy is available. Other responsibilities as assigned. Qualifications
Bachelor Degree in Mechanical Engineering required; Master degree preferred 3-5 years of relevant design experience [Preferred] Familiarity with aerospace product development, including designing to MIL-STD-810 and DO-160 environmental test requirements and willingness to learn Experience in electronics packaging [preferred] and willingness to learn Experience in design of rotating machines [highly desirable] and willingness to learn Mastery of mechanical engineering concepts, including heat transfer, rotor dynamics, vibration, and finite element analysis (e.g., SolidWorks Simulation) Excellent proficiency with 2D and 3D CAD software (SolidWorks preferred) Temperature and/or Vibration test experience highly desirable Experience in leading projects or programs Experience in developing new products, including design, prototyping, and testing Experience in multi-physics design and analysis (electrical, mechanical, thermal, fluid dynamics) Creativity, good written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills Ability and aptitude to mentor junior Engineers Benefits
