Autonomous Vehicle Safety & Compliance Engineer – Lyft Join to apply for the Autonomous Vehicle Safety & Compliance Engineer role at Lyft. As a member of the Office of Safety and Compliance, you’ll drive the safety of our autonomous vehicle efforts and coordinate interactions with other teams and external organizations. The position reports to the Director - Office of Safety and Compliance (OSaC), in the Legal Department. Responsibilities
Develop and assess partner safety cases for vehicle platforms, including driving technical safety requirements and processes based on AV industry standards and best practices (e.g., UL 4600, ISO 26262 - Functional Safety, ISO 21448 - SOTIF). Support onsite and offsite evaluation of outside partner AV safety programs; conduct engineering audits, testing, assessments, and evaluations; document thoroughly with engineering reports. Conduct onsite public-road and closed-course testing and analysis to quantify safety readiness, incident investigation, risk, compliance, and safety decision making. Use Quantified Risk Management (QRM) tools and methods (FMEDA, DFMEA, FTA, DFA) to perform quantified technical risk assessments for safety issues with partner vehicles, operation, and cybersecurity systems. Develop and monitor vehicle performance and risk metrics to support grounding, pausing, and return to operation of partner vehicles on the Lyft platform. Contribute to autonomous vehicle safety process development and support safety perspectives in collaboration with Business and Legal teams. Support partners’ complex safety incident investigations, drive resolution, and maintain documented incident and issue reports. Ensure Lyft’s AV platforms meet FMVSS regulations, state codes, reporting, and other applicable standards, regulations, and orders. Maintain exhaustive source-of-truth documentation for technical safety audits, assessments, testing, risk, and compliance requirements. Conduct technical engineering reviews and audits to evaluate compliance with technical requirements for new and existing products and processes. Create and maintain documentation of safety assessments, risk decisions, and compliance; coordinate tech compliance with operational and reporting compliance with Legal Compliance. Occasional domestic travel, sometimes on short notice. Qualifications
5+ years of experience in a relevant field such as Systems engineering, ADAS/ADK design and development, Sensor (RADAR/LIDAR/Camera) design and development or Functional safety engineering. Direct experience in AV functional safety and SOTIF approaches and related V&V methodology. Detailed experience with validation and verification of complex autonomous systems. Experience with emerging EU/UK homologation regulations as applied to autonomous vehicles and ADS/ADK equipment. Technical skills and knowledge: Hands-on experience in systems engineering and architecture of complex systems. Experience designing, executing, and analyzing validation and verification testing; data analysis and reporting skills are a plus. Knowledge of UL 4600, ISO 26262, 21448, IEC 61508 and other industry standards. Safety analysis methodologies (HARA, FMEA, Fault Tree Analysis, Hazard Operability Study). Experience with requirements management, traceability, and decomposition; familiarity with JAMA. Soft Skills and Leadership: Leadership: demonstrated technical leadership of safety teams and junior engineers, able to drive safety initiatives with internal and external stakeholders. Communication: excellent written and verbal communication skills; able to articulate complex safety concepts to a diverse cross-functional team. Collaboration & Teamwork: able to work in a fast-paced environment and influence other team members. Problem Solving: strong analytical abilities to identify hazards and develop mitigation strategies. Attention to Detail: meticulous in documentation, analysis, and verification for compliance. Education: Required: Bachelor's degree in engineering (Electrical, Mechanical, Systems, Automotive or Computer). Preferred: Master’s degree in a relevant engineering discipline. Benefits
