Overview

Lab Specialist position in a research lab focused on the impact of hypoxia on rodent behavior and molecular markers for inflammation and oxidative stress. The applicant will consult with the supervisor on lab protocols and experimental design, but will then work independently on research projects. Experience with rats and preferably with rodent behavioral assays is required. Proficiency in lab techniques such as ELISA, westerns, flow cytometry, cryostat sectioning and immunohistochemical staining is required. The applicant must be able to read experimental protocols and set up new assays in the lab with minimal supervision. The applicant should have experience with analyzing data, conducting statistical analyses, and reporting data to senior lab personnel in a timely and organized manner. The applicant should be able to communicate clearly on experiments conducted and data generated. Experience with ordering through USHOP and literature surveys/assessing new protocols to be used in the lab is a plus. Responsibilities

Oversee the training of junior lab techs in the laboratory. Confers with senior laboratory personnel regarding the procedures and techniques to be followed in conducting research and recommends modifications as needed. Assists with and trains others to conduct tests and procedures according to laboratory protocols. Assists with and trains others in routine maintenance and cleanliness of lab areas. Assists with and trains others to conduct literature reviews to obtain abstracts and information to be utilized in research. Assists with and trains others to make statistical calculations, analyze data and prepare reports summarizing results. May assist with and train others to supervise the care of research animals or collect tissue for laboratory analysis. Nearly Continuously: Office environment. Often: Exposure to infectious disease, oils, hazards (e.g., proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, scaffolding/high places, exposure to chemicals). Seldom: Exposure to animals. Physical Requirements:

Nearly Continuously: Hearing, listening, talking. Often: Repetitive hand motion (typing), walking, standing, sitting. Seldom: Bending, reaching overhead. Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry or other scientific discipline or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience); two years full-time laboratory experience; and demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills required. Working knowledge of advanced scientific techniques and procedures, the ability to make statistical calculations, analyze results, prepare reports and perform specialized tests also required. This position is patient-sensitive and must fulfill all associated requirements. Prior experience with rodent behavior is preferred, especially with assays for cognitive function. Prior experience in ELISA, PCR, flow cytometry, westerns and immunocytochemistry is preferred.
