Position Summary
Under the administrative and clinical direction of the Director of Rehabilitation Services and the supervision of Supervisor of Occupational Therapy, the Occupational Therapist is responsible for assigned administrative functions in a clinical capacity, participates in the educational activities of the department, and provides for personal and professional growth and development. The Occupational Therapist reflects the Occupational Therapy Code of Ethics as set forth by the Representative Assemble of the American Occupational Therapy Association. The Occupational Therapist practices within the boundaries outline in the State of Illinois Occupational Therapy Practice Act.
These duties are to be performed in a highly confidential manner, in accordance with the mission, values and behaviors of Insight Chicago Hospital and Medical Center. Knowledge
Graduate of an ACOTE accredited Occupational Therapy Program with a B.S., entry-level Masters of Advanced Master, degree. Active Illinois licensure or eligibility required. Must have successfully completed the certification examination for occupational therapist and initial registration with the National Board of Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) required. Must hold current valid license for occupational therapy practice in the State of Illinois required. Must be able to demonstrate evidence of regular continuing education that supports current clinical, and student educational practice required.
Skills
Possess thorough knowledge of clinical and theoretical aspects of occupational therapy application in the area(s) assigned and ability to share knowledge and skills through formal and informal adult educational experiences required. Possess an interest and willingness to master a specialized body of knowledge applicable to occupational therapy required Possess general knowledge and demonstrated clinical competence in the use of occupational therapy treatment theories, and modalities required Possess the ability to develop patient treatment plans and facilitates therapeutic relationships with patients and families required. Acts as an exemplary role model of Insight Chicago behaviors and mission. Possess basic knowledge and experience with the use of technology (i.e. computers) in treatment, documentation, or willingness and ability to learn required.

Ability to effectively and appropriately communicate with inter and intra departmental personnel and with patients and families. Ability to foster a therapeutic environment and to develop and implement sound treatment plans that maximizes the patient’s potential and available resources required. Ability to adapt to method of communication to meet the cognitive, psychosocial, and physical needs of the patient required Ability to adapt to change and to implement new procedures and plans quickly required Ability to provide weekend and evening treatment as assigned preferred.
Duties And Responsibilities
Functions in an administrative capacity: 40%
Provides work direction to and supervision for assigned students, aides, technicians and Occupational Therapy Assistants, as follows:
Monitors productivity of assigned work group. Assists in determining day to day staffing needs of an assigned work group Assists in the clinical development, review and revision of program policies, procedures and protocols within a work group. Ensures timely and accurate billing and charge entry data by work group. Submits monthly statistics and other administrative reports assigned. Participates in Program Development and Performance Improvement: Assist in developing educational materials and coordinates staff training within the assigned work group Collects data and reports statistics to support the need or continued development of a program. Assist in developing and implements Performance Improvement initiatives. Participates in Staff Development and Competency: Assists in establishing clinical competency standards and assesses competency of students, aides, technicians, and Occupational Therapy Assistants. Provides clinical feedback and mentoring to students, aides/techs, and Occupational Therapy Assistants. Acts as primary clinical resource to aides, technicians and Occupational Therapy Assistants and Completes Performance Appraisals for assigned staff and submits to director/supervisor for review and processing. Coordination the Departmental Clinical In-service Schedule Attends and participates in department and organizational meetings assigned. Participates in Safety and Environment of Care Tasks: Adheres to all departmental and organizational safety standards, attends mandatory in-services and reports unsafe conditions (environment, equipment, etc.) Assists in developing unit and departmental safety policies and procedures. Acts as Safety Coordinator for assigned area. Conducts Safety Inspections on a routine basis and reports outcomes to Director/Supervisor. Monitors Quality Control indicators in assigned areas Coordinates assigned unit safety in-services and assists in coordinating department safety in-services.
Contributes To Fiscal Compliance
Effectively utilizes resources to ensure compliance with budgetary parameters and recommends necessary equipment. Orders equipment as assigned for unit and departmental accounts.
Functions in a clinical capacity: 40%
Responds to Referral/Request for Service: Follows department standards for turnaround time of appropriate response to request for Occupational Therapy service. Oversees the response of assigned Occupational Therapy Assistants, students, aides/techs as required Functions (and ensures assigned other function) within the Occupational Therapy Scope of Practice, Code of Ethics and compliant with AOTA (American Occupational Therapy Association) Practice Standards and Illinois licensure.
Assessment
Completes Occupational Therapy assessments in accordance with departmental and/or clinical protocol for all assigned patients and interprets results. Performs specialized assessments according to protocol and/or trains, provides supervision, and assesses the competency of assigned staff. Functions as a primary clinical resource for staff.
Treatment Planning
Establishes and appropriately modifies Occupational Therapy treatment plans for all assigned patients Guides the use of Occupational Therapy theoretical framework and functions as a primary clinical resource for assigned Staff. Works collaboratively with other members of the healthcare team and facilitates collaborative treatment planning with assigned staff.
Treatment Implementation And Follow Up
Implements treatments plans and monitors the implementation of assigned personnel. Follows appropriate protocol for utilization of treatment modalities, technology and techniques, and ensures the same for assigned personnel. Assists in introducing new skills and techniques congruent with Occupational Therapy theory and frame of reference Demonstrates the ability to effectively achieve treatment goals within the specified timeframe. Recommends and facilitates appropriate clinical follow-up and acts as a primary clinical resource for assigned personnel.
Clinical Documentation
Maintains all clinical records and documentation in accordance with clinical and departmental, organizational and regulatory protocols and monitors compliance of assigned personnel. Follows departmental and organizational protocols for use of information technology (i.e. computers). Reviews, approves and co-signs student, Occupational Therapy Assistants and licensure eligible Occupational Therapy clinical documentation as designated. Assists with chart reviews and conducts chart reviews as needed.
Communication
Attends and actively participates in patient staffing, interdisciplinary conferences and team meetings. Facilitates individual staff mentorship meeting with assigned personnel. Assists in leading/facilitating work group (team) meetings. Conduct daily stand-ups as directed and role model daily mindset management techniques. Reports all pertinent staff, clinical and/or work group issues to the Supervisor or Director in a timely fashion. Adheres to organizational and departmental standards of confidentiality and provides guidance to assigned personnel.
Functions in an educational capacity: 10%
Acts as clinical education supervisor for occupational therapy (Level I/II) students. Reviews and prepares education materials and provides student in-services. Implements educational objectives Assigns and monitors student caseloads. On an ongoing basis, assesses student's competency and ensures that student(s) provide a high level of patient care. Completes all required fieldwork documentation (i.e. the FEW) and adheres to AOTA guidelines for student supervision.
May act as the department fieldwork education coordinator after a minimum of (3) yrs clinical experience:
Secures Fieldwork Agreements with colleges and universities. Develops behavioral objectives for the fieldwork program. Coordinate the departmental fieldwork student schedule. Functions as a liaison between the department, school and student. Provides student orientation to the facility Notifies school of problems, issues and/or potential student terminations. Maintains the student file and ensures appropriate documentation to meet AOTA and organizational requirements for fieldwork activity. Provides training, support, and guidance to clinical supervisors.
Provides for professional growth and development: 10%
Remains abreast of clinical developments in the field of Occupational Therapy Completes all competency requirements of the position. Participates in a minimum of 24 hours of continuing education (i.e. workshops, in-services, seminars, structured reading, self-study course, mentorship, etc.) Participates (at least monthly) in department leadership activities. Presents a minimum of (1) clinically focused in service topics per year Represents the department on interdisciplinary (clinically focused) cross functional groups. Maintains CPR certification. Participates in recruitment and retention activities for the department Assist in marketing activities as assigned. Participate in professional activities as appropriate. Performs all other duties as assigned
