Overview Athletics – West High

Purpose of Position: The Head Softball Coach will oversee the entire West HS Softball Program and instruct the varsity high school softball team. The Head Coach is responsible for helping each student-athlete gain success by reaching their full potential in the classroom and on the field.
Supervisory Responsibilities Supervise the softball program coaching staff including Varsity Assistant, Junior Varsity (JV), and Freshman coaches.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
Oversee training of softball players in all positions in conjunction with other coaches.
Develop training plans for softball players in conjunction with other coaches.
Assist in overseeing the running of specific events as needed at home games as directed by the Athletic Director.
Contribute to game line-up planning with other coaches.
Attend and coach all practices.
Attend and coach all games.
Assist other coaches in monitoring team members’ practice attendance, school attendance, game attendance, and grades.
Assist other coaches in enforcing team policies.
Provide student-athletes feedback about performance related to disposition, behavior, and team skills.
Manage program budget and organize fundraising efforts for the softball program.
Coordinate competition and practice schedules with the Athletic Director.
Coordinate off-season training and conditioning for the softball program.
Complete the required WIAA Rules Exam for softball by the 2026 spring sports season.
Qualifications
Demonstrated ability to provide positive development and motivation of student-athletes.
If no teaching license, successful completion of an approved coach’s education course (ASEP) or the ability to complete the course prior to the second season of coaching.
Current certification or must obtain within one month of employment and maintain CPR/AED certification from a national certifying organization.
Strong softball background preferred with experience at the High School Level.
Knowledge of softball skills, development, and game strategies.
Organizational skills related to softball.
Skill in planning progressive conditioning and developmental softball programs.
Ability to initiate and maintain communication with parents.
Commitment to year-round personal knowledge enhancement as a means for continuous program development.
Ability to work cooperatively with other staff.
Preferred: Valid teaching license
Preferred: College playing/coaching experience
Preferred: Demonstrated ability to successfully implement softball systems in a high school setting
Length of Work WIAA 2026 Spring Sports Season
Working Conditions Will be expected to work evenings and weekends. Will be expected to work in various outdoor weather conditions.
Physical Requirements The job will require you to stand for extended periods of time, while coaching at practices and games.
