Comments: The job of INTERPRETER-ASL is done for the purpose of assisting our Deaf ASL teachers and their students by adapting teachers' lesson plans to relay necessary information for students to gain subject knowledge. This position will be interpreting for a Deaf ASL teacher in the ASL classroom. Purpose Statement The job of Interpreter is done for the purpose/s of providing support to the instructional program, i.e. certificated staff member and/or students with specific responsibilities for translating a variety of documents and interpreting for functions and meetings; documents to/from target language primarily in support of the education program. Interprets teacher's American Sign Language (ASL) for the purpose of relaying necessary information to students in order for them to gain subject knowledge. This job is distinguished from similar jobs by the following characteristics: CTE. Essential Functions
Collaborates with certificated staff members for the purpose of leading, guiding, and/or coordinating with students. Interprets spoken language to sign language and reverse for the purpose of enabling students and staff to relay information so that student and teacher can understand one another. Interprets teacher's ASL for the purpose of relaying necessary information to students in order for them to gain subject knowledge. Monitors student interactions for the purpose of providing accurate and timely feedback to the classroom teacher. Participates in meetings and trainings for the purpose of sharing information and/or improving the employee's skills and knowledge. Provides clerical and general classroom assistance for staff (e.g. collecting and inputting data, correspondence, copying, filing, preparing, and organizing instructional materials, etc.) for the purpose of providing general support for classroom activities related to learning goals and objectives. Works under limited supervision using standardized practices and/or methods for the purpose of operating within a defined budget. Utilizes some resources from other work units for the purpose of performing required job functions. Other Functions
Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit. Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications
Skills, Knowledge, And Abilities Preparing and maintaining accurate records. Basic math; reading technical information, composing documents, facilitating group discussions; and solving practical problems. American Sign Language (ASL) or Signing Exact English (SEE). Scheduling activities; gathering, collating, and/or classifying data; using job-related equipment. Working with a diversity of individuals and/or groups and utilizing job-related equipment. Problem solving and creating action plans. Communicating with diverse groups; establishing and maintaining cooperative and effective working relationships; maintaining confidentiality. Work Environment
Occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling with significant fine finger dexterity. Requires 20% sitting, 30% walking, 50% standing. Clean and healthy environment. Experience
Job related experience within a specialized field is required. Education (Minimum)
Community college and/or vocational school degree with study in job-related area with an emphasis in American Sign Language (ASL) or Signing Exact English (SEE); load must achieve a score of 3.5 on the performance portion of the Education Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA); or hold Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) certification and pass the written assessment of the EIPA. Certificates and Licenses
ASL or SEE Interpreter Certification. The Professional Educator Standards Board (PESB) sets performance standards for educational interpreters for the Deaf. These performance standards can be met through one of two available options. Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) with a minimum score of 4.0, and the EIPA written test with a passing score. National Interpreter Certification from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID), and the EIPA written test with a passing score. Continuing Educational / Training
Maintains Certificates and/or Licenses. Clearances
