Overview ASDB (Arizona State Schools for the Deaf and the Blind) serves over 2,000 children who are blind, visually impaired, deaf, hard of hearing or deafblind from birth to grade 12. ASDB operates two schools for the deaf, one school for the blind, a statewide Early Learning Program (birth to three and preschool), and Itinerant Services for students attending district partner schools. ASDB is dedicated to empowering diverse young children and students with educational opportunities to succeed in college, career, and life.

Job Description Provides interpreting services in educational settings for deaf, hard of hearing, and deaf-blind students, pursuant to the students’ IEPs. Matches the language use of students, peers, and instructors, and travels as needed to interpret in the educational setting. Facilitates communication between peers and others in the environment; clarifies information interpreted to the student within the classroom to aid understanding of lesson content. May participate as an IEP team member regarding language use and/or communication access; communicates with classroom teachers and educational personnel about the communication needs of the student(s) and course subject matter on a regular basis, and fulfills other responsibilities consistent with host district(s) and ASDB policies and procedures.

In addition, this position may be assigned as a vocational support and/or a Transition Technician (Career Path Technician). The Educational Interpreter/Transition Technician assists students individually in academic or vocational subjects as assigned by the IEP team, under supervision of the Lead Interpreter and/or Teacher of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing or another appointed agency representative. This support may include tutoring in vocational content when not interpreting. CPT interpreters may also provide transportation to and from internships/CTE jobs or classes and provide on-site interpreting for students.

Position may include some or all listed duties and additional duties as they occur.

Training and Experience Required: High School Diploma or equivalent; previous experience working with children or adults in paid or voluntary positions in educational settings.

Preferred: Associate degree or higher in Interpreting, American Sign Language, and/or Deaf Studies; prior experience as an Educational Interpreter; experience in an educational setting.

Minimum of twelve (12) hours of professional development per year is required by the agency’s Educational Interpreters. Training may be agency-provided or community-based; staff must obtain supervisor approval and report documentation annually.

Licensing/Certification Requirements Must pass FBI and State background checks. Defensive Driver Training required for all agency personnel who drive on State business. Demonstrate minimum proficiency in interpreting skills through one of the following: 3.5+ on EIPA or valid RID/NAD/BEI certifications (including, but not limited to, CSC, CI, CT, CDI, SC:L, NIC variations, BEI variations, NAD level 3 or higher).

If a candidate does not meet minimum proficiency, eligibility may be considered with a plan to reach qualifications within three years, including required training hours and progress milestones. Lead Educational Interpreters must possess a minimum EIPA score of 4.0 and/or hold a valid RID/NAD/BEI certification as listed above.

Use multiple communication modes and ensure accurate interpretation; assess recipient comprehension

Meet the physical and mental demands of interpreting work

Transition Technician/Educational Interpreter: tutor students as determined by the IEP team and with proper training
