Database Administrator (Sybase/SQL Server)
Dice is partnering with Aroha Technologies to fill a highly focused Database Administrator position. This role is critical to the company’s transition from Sybase to a pure SQL Server environment and requires a candidate who can work a hybrid schedule, manage enterprise change control, and support mission‑critical operations.
Employment Details
Duration: 1‑year contract with extension likely
Hybrid: Onsite Tuesdays and Wednesdays; no remote‑only option
Location: Aroha Technologies headquarters; local candidates strongly preferred; non‑local candidates must be willing to relocate at their own expense and follow the hybrid schedule
Work Hours: 40 hours per week, Monday‑Friday; 40‑hour on‑call rotation Saturday morning‑Monday morning after learning period
Prescreening required: The candidate must submit the attached pre‑screening questions with the application
Responsibilities
Maintain and support the existing Sybase 15.7 environment on Solaris X86 hardware and the upcoming SQL Server environment on Windows Server and Azure
Execute change control procedures, including formal change request documentation and approval workflows
Participate in the migration from Sybase to SQL Server, applying migration tools and techniques to move databases and minimize downtime
Develop and troubleshoot CRON jobs and command‑line scripts on Unix/Linux platforms to automate routine maintenance tasks
Assist senior DBAs with after‑hours implementations and reduce overall per‑DBA workload, particularly during peak periods
Perform weekly data fixes on Thursday and Friday to resolve data issues and support data integrity initiatives
Support Windows Server clusters and disaster recovery environments across development, test, and production systems
Communicate clearly and concisely in written and verbal formats to enable effective collaboration with the database team
Qualifications
4–5 years of experience with Sybase ASE 15.7 and SQL Server, including migration projects
Strong troubleshooting skills and experience in formal change control environments
Unix/Solaris/Linux background with command‑line expertise for CRON job development
Experience with Windows Server administration and cluster configuration
Knowledge of Azure cloud and virtualization for database operations
Demonstrated ability to meet migration tool requirements and virtual environment management
Excellent written and verbal communication skills to support day‑to‑day database activities
