Compensation Estimated Hiring Salary Range: $56,563-$65,047 To Be Determined Based on Experience and Qualifications

Duties of the School Resource Officer
Enforces federal, state, and local laws and ordinances.
Investigates criminal activity committed on school property or involving students assigned to the officer’s school.
Counsel students in special situations as needed or requested by appropriate school officials or parents.
Answers questions that staff and students may have about juvenile law or North Carolina laws.
Assists law enforcement officers from other agencies with investigations concerning students attending the school that the officer is assigned.
Notifies appropriate school officials regarding potential criminal matters that may impact the school.
Assumes a command role during a criminal incident on school property until authorized personnel arrive and is relieved of the command role by a higher-ranking Sheriff Office supervisor.
Maintains communication with school administration and supervisors through assigned radio communication.
Performs the Law Enforcement duties of a Deputy Sheriff during non-school months and on an as needed basis.
Performs related work as required.
Duties of Deputy Sheriff
Patrols a geographic region of the County to detect and deter crime; responds to calls for assistance; conducts preliminary investigations of crimes and complaints; detects unusual conditions; may maintain surveillance and observation for stolen cars, missing persons, or suspects.
Responds to calls for assistance, complaints, suspicious activity, domestic disputes, loud and disruptive behavior, and other needs; completes calls by determining true nature of the situation and taking whatever legal or persuasive action is warranted.
Serves criminal papers such as warrants, subpoenas, notices of hearing, order of forfeiture, and commitment papers; locates people to serve papers, explains briefly the meaning of the papers being served, and makes arrests when necessary.
Serves civil process papers such as civil summons, magistrate summons, notice of rights, subpoenas, and court orders dealing with child support, child custody, and domestic violence; explains briefly the meaning of papers served and remains on the scene after serving certain papers until the civil process is completed.
Performs investigations of accidents and crimes through observation, questioning witnesses, securing the crime scene, gathering physical evidence, and may serve as the evidence custodian; performs investigative tasks assigned by Investigator, arrests and processes criminal suspects.
Prepares necessary case files and materials for court; attends court to serve as a witness and provide evidence in court when necessary.
Advices the public on laws and local ordinances; provides information to the general public.
Conducts commercial and residential property security checks.
Regulates and directs vehicular traffic at busy times or when traffic signal malfunction or accidents require; maintains order at public gatherings.
Depending upon job assignment, employee may also administer the D.A.R.E. program within the County schools; prepares lesson plans; conducts the lessons; and prepares all public interest events associated with the program.
May serve as School Resource Officer and provide security to the school environment, participants in presentations related to law enforcement; works with staff on disciplinary issues.
May serve as a K-9 officer and respond to all calls needing a canine search, trains and cares for the canine.
May serve as Court Bailiff providing courtroom security for judges, the public, and inmates; calls court into session and ensures judges’ security and other needs are met; performs coordination, seclusion, and other procedures with juries; escorts inmates to and from the courtroom.
Transports inmates as needed.
Performs related duties as required.
Performs a variety of special duties, critical incident activities, natural and man-made disaster activities.
Requirements For The Deputy Sheriff/School Resource Officer
Must be a United States Citizen, be at least 21 years of age, currently hold a North Carolina Basic Law Enforcement Training Certification (BLET), have been issued a General Law Enforcement Certification by the North Carolina Sheriff’s Education and Training and Standards Commission or the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training and Standards Commission, and preferably have two years of law enforcement experience.
Must possess a valid North Carolina driver’s license upon hire.
Salary incentives are available for experience, military, fluent in Spanish, degree, and/or certifications.
