Responsibilities
Patrol assigned areas by vehicle, bicycle, or foot; respond to requests for service; investigate potential hazards and suspicious activity.
Enforce laws and ordinances; maintain public safety; detain and apprehend suspects; testify in court.
Investigate assigned cases: collect evidence, interview witnesses, prepare detailed investigative reports and submit cases for prosecution.
Operate two‑way radios, cameras, computers, breathalyzers, and other emergency equipment; maintain proficiency with firearms.
Establish and maintain effective communication with superiors, co‑workers, law‑enforcement partners, and the public; cooperate with media when permitted.
Maintain personal discipline, comply with laws and department policy, and promote a positive work atmosphere.
Attend training; participate in specialized units and assignments; provide training to other department employees, volunteers, and citizens.
Perform other related duties as assigned. Requires regular, reliable attendance.
Minimum Requirements
At least 2 years of continuous, full‑time law‑enforcement service with a Washington State civilian agency within the last three years.
Out‑of‑state applicants must have at least two of the last three years of continuous, full‑time service with a civilian law‑enforcement agency and be able to complete the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission Equivalency Examination within one year after employment.
Citizen of the United States or lawful permanent resident; able to read and write English; high school diploma or equivalent; in good health and of good moral character.
Must pass pre‑selection interview, situational assessment, pre‑suitability testing, polygraph, psychological, medical examination, drug screening, and comprehensive background investigation.
Must possess normal color vision and visual acuity of not less than 20/100 in each eye, corrected to 20/20 in the better eye and 20/30 in the lesser eye.
Verification of Peace Officer certification and all training records must be attached to application.
Must obtain and maintain a valid Washington State driver’s license; Washington State applicants must maintain Washington State Peace Officer certification. Out‑of‑state applicants must be a certified police officer in their home state.
Physical Demands Work is performed both indoors and outdoors, often in adverse weather. The role requires lifting or carrying objects up to 50 pounds, frequent use of both hands for typing and other fine motor tasks, and occasional stooping, bending, or climbing stairs. Exposure to chemicals, blood, saliva, or bodily fluids may occur at crime scenes. Must wear appropriate safety equipment as necessary and maintain long‑term and short‑term memory to learn procedures.
Unusual Working Conditions Rotating shift assignments, night hours, exposure to inclement weather, call‑back on short notice, and working on weekends and holidays. Stress related to making decisions that impact personal and public safety without time for reflection. Overtime work caused by incidents in progress or the necessity to meet critical deadlines.
