Managing Attorney, Workers' Comp Litigation (In-house/Remote)

PURPOSE OF THE JOB The purpose of the Managing Attorney is to oversee the operational aspects for the Litigation Management team working closely with the department Director. This role will create, manage and improve operational processes, as well as assist with budget planning, financial measures and results. The Managing Attorney will identify and lead initiatives to improve the team’s efficiency and ensures effective communication between the legal and business teams. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Directs the operations of law office personnel providing litigation and legal services. Oversees law office operations to ensure efficient operations of In-House Counsel. Contributes to strategic business decisions to achieve company goals. Ensures the firm is achieving its client satisfaction goals by evaluating productivity and quality of service. Identifies, makes recommendations for work process improvements and follows through to implement remediations. Works with management to ensure the department meets financial and ROI goals, identifies trends, prepares reports, and implements modifications as needed. Mentors less experienced attorneys, law clerks, paralegals and assistants to help them advance in the field of law by continuing to expand their knowledge, skills and abilities. Provides litigation services and is responsible for all aspects of assigned Workers’ Compensation matters. Handles a reduced caseload of litigated files and ensures files are fully worked and moved to resolution. Litigates workers’ compensation cases in California before all state and federal courts, administrative boards, and other court proceedings. Represents ICW Group, its related entities and insureds before administrative boards, state and federal courts, Court of Appeal, and the California Supreme Court. Analyzes complex legal and factual issues; conducts extensive, well-reasoned legal research, as necessary; independently develops and presents defense strategies on behalf of ICW Group. Provides strategic legal advice, recommendation, and implementation of clear, cost-effective, and efficient plans of action. Assists in analyzing, reviewing, and distributing information on new legislation, regulations, and court decisions. Provides oversight of a team of Litigation Management professionals. Supervises and evaluates, mentors, motivates, and develops associate attorneys, paralegals, law clerks, hearing representatives, and support staff to strengthen our legal team. Communicates clear performance expectations for associate attorneys, paralegals, law clerks, hearing representatives, and support staff as well as providing support and guidance for achieving expectations. Expands the substantive expertise of associate attorneys, paralegals, law clerks, hearing representatives. Communicates and enforces team values including mission statement of In House Counsel (IHC) and ICW. Establishes and maintains the overall work cadence and, in partnership with Department leadership, ensures performance and outcomes strive for excellence in delivery and customer experience. Acts as a resource for team members to answer questions and solve complex problems. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Bachelor’s degree from four-year college or university required. Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school required. Minimum 8-10 years of workers’ compensation legal experience required. 2 years supervisory experience of one or more of the following roles: associate attorneys, paralegals, law clerks, hearing representatives or support staff required. CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS Licensed and in good standing with the State Bar of California with no history of public or private reprisals. KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS Expert knowledge litigating California workers’ compensation matters with trial experience and prior experience handling cases with varying degrees of complexity. Deep understanding of workers’ compensation administrative rules, laws, statutes, legal principles and practices. Ability to work with Excel including skilled at creating financial and performance reports. Ability to communicate effectively with external and internal team members, clients, businesses, and members of the State Bar and Judiciary, including effectively responding to concerns and sensitive matters.
