New York State Courts is hiring for
Court Interpreters (Sign)
to provide vital interpreting services. Court Interpreters (Sign) are primarily responsible for interpreting between
American Sign Language (ASL)
and spoken
English
in the courtroom and other related settings. When interpreting services are not required, Court Interpreters (Sign) may be tasked with scheduling per diem interpreting services, performing clerical duties such as filing, answering inquiries, and handling other related responsibilities. Key Responsibilities Interpreting between
English
and
American Sign Language (ASL)
in formal and informal court settings, including hearings, trials, meetings, and conferences. Translating official, technical, medical, legal, and other written materials, such as documents, certificates, and letters, into ASL to ensure clarity and understanding. Assisting deaf and hard of hearing individuals in completing forms, preparing complaints, and other necessary documentation related to their legal matters. Performing clerical tasks such as indexing, filing court papers, and maintaining records for legal proceedings. Responding to routine inquiries from the public regarding services, court procedures, and assistance for deaf and hard of hearing individuals. Providing other support as needed to assist deaf and hard of hearing individuals in navigating the court system effectively. Qualifications: High School Diploma
or
the equivalent
and
professional certification by a recognized credentialing authority as required by Section 390 of the judiciary law;
or
an equivalent combination of education and certification. NOTE: The Chief Administrative Judge has established the
Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, Inc (RID)
as a recognized credentialing authority. The minimum RID credential required by the New York State Unified Court System is the
National Interpreter Certificate (NIC) . Prior to appointment, candidates may be required to participate in an assessment of their language competency and skills. Salary:
$72,191 + up to $4,920 Location pay (NYC, Nassau, Suffolk, or the 9th Judicial District) To Apply:
