Under the general supervision of a designated supervisor, perform law enforcement work concerned with protecting the lives and property of the public, maintaining law and order, detecting and apprehending suspects in criminal cases, crime prevention, community relations and educational programs/activities.

Responsibilities

The following categories are part of the responsibilities, listed with emphasis on proficiency: Constitutional Law – Arrest and detention activities – Search and Seizure; investigations including collecting intelligence and evidence, interviewing and searches; Civil disorders – controlling unruly crowds or hostile persons; Civil process – enforce orders and service of process; Verbal de-escalation; Court and UNH administrative actions (preparing complaints and warrants); Crime prevention (assessing and correcting risks, organizing programs); Traffic enforcement (motor vehicle, parking, DWI laws, traffic control); Report writing (policies, forms, statements, memos); Juvenile activities (juvenile reports/petitions; interaction with juveniles, parents, schools, judges, and DCYF); Accident investigation (scene security and reporting).

Patrol duties in assigned areas, buildings, streets and grounds with responsibility for enforcing motor vehicle and criminal laws, policies, rules and regulations of the University Police Department and applicable laws; engage with the public and other law enforcement officers to obtain information vital for case development, accident investigations, and review; perform duties with considerable physical effort under varying conditions.

Use of force: exercise discretion under state and federal law in the use of force, including deadly or non-deadly force; deescalate volatile situations; operate law enforcement and job-related equipment.

Perform duties at special events and render assistance to the public; enforce college/university rules and regulations.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or equivalent.

Must be 21 years of age at the time of appointment.

Must possess a valid NH driver’s license.

No criminal record other than minor motor vehicle violations.

Successful completion of a Written Test, Oral Board Examination, and Administrative Review/Board, Physical Agility Test.

Certification as a full-time police officer by the New Hampshire Police Standards and Training Council or ability to receive certification within one year of appointment.

Ability to project self-assurance, positive first impression, written communication, and the ability to react and cope with stressful situations; evaluate situations with common sense.

Resourcefulness, tact and skill in dealing with the general public and distressed individuals.
