Job Description: Special Requirements: Must pass or be a graduate of the Rhode Island Municipal Police Training Academy or another accredited academy, and this Department’s Campus Police Officer training program, including receiving instruction on Use of Force policy. Must be eligible for licensing as a Special Police Officer by the Superintendent of the Rhode Island State Police. Those candidates who are required to attend the RI Municipal Police Training Academy must pass all recruitment training courses, including Emergency Water Safety. Pass psychological and physical exam. Be 21 years of age or older. Possess a valid driver’s license and the ability to operate a motor vehicle. Must be a US citizen. Have high school diploma or GED; higher education is a plus. Must have no felony convictions. Ability to provide high level of customer service. Ability to treat others with dignity and respect regardless of the situation. Officers will work on a rotation schedule, four days on and two days off. A. Nature of Work

The Campus Police Officer shall be responsible for the safety and security of all University properties; the faculty, staff, student body; and guests and visitors during the assigned tour of duty. The Campus Police Officer will patrol the University buildings, grounds and adjacent public areas to enforce the statutes of the State of Rhode Island, and the rules and regulations of Brown University. The Campus Police Officer shall be individually responsible for the post or assignment during the official tour of duty. This responsibility includes: Prevention and suppression of crime. Protection of life and property. Apprehension and protection of offenders. Preservation of the peace and maintenance of order. Enforcement of all state statutes and University regulations. Assist with the development and improvement of mechanisms to create and enhance relationships with the department and the Community. The Campus Police Officer is licensed by the Superintendent of State Police under Title 12, Chapter 2.1, of the General Laws of Rhode Island. The officer shall have the same immunities and may exercise the powers and authority of police officers as conferred by Rhode Island law, including the power to arrest for violations of state statutes or city/town ordinances where the institution is located. The Campus Police Officer has concurrent jurisdiction with State Police and Providence Police Departments. Police Officers must maintain a high level of proficiency in the use of police equipment including firearms and may use deadly force when appropriate based on state law and Department policy. B. Illustrative Examples of Work

The Campus Police Officer will patrol Brown University buildings and grounds by the designated mode, with emphasis on areas of high crime incidents; conduct criminal investigations; prepare reports; make arrests and process individuals; testify in court or University hearings; provide directions and information to guests and visitors; respond to emergencies (fires, injuries); assist in training of new officers; inspect and maintain equipment (firearms and clothing); perform other duties to protect lives, safety and property; and perform related work as required. C. Qualifications

Must be able to effect an arrest using handcuffs and restraints; subdue resisting suspects using maneuvers and weapons in self-defense. Must operate and utilize various law enforcement equipment; proficiency with firearms approved for department use. Must be capable of gathering information in investigations, interviewing victims, witnesses, suspects, and confidential informants; prepare investigative reports and sketches. Must exercise independent judgment on detained suspicions, probable cause, searches, arrests, and use of force. Must possess a valid driver’s license and operate a law enforcement vehicle in day/night, emergency, and challenging road conditions. Must be able to pursue suspects and perform rescue operations including lifting and carrying, climbing, crawling, and other physical activities. Must communicate effectively over law enforcement radio channels and conduct patrols including rotating shifts and building checks. Must perform rescue functions at accidents, emergencies, and disasters; extinguish small fires where appropriate. Must process and transport prisoners using appropriate restraints; conduct searches of people, vehicles, buildings, and large outdoor areas. Must conduct visual and audio surveillance for extended periods; communicate effectively with a diverse population, including juveniles, and endure verbal/mental stress in a hostile environment. Must read and comprehend legal documents and demonstrate communication skills in court and formal settings. Must identify evidence and substances related to offenses and dangerous conditions. Must pass a comprehensive background investigation; candidates must not have felony convictions. Must pass a psychological test and a physical examination; must complete Campus Police Officer training, including Use of Force policy. Must be 21 years of age, a United States citizen, and have a high school education (higher education in a related field preferred). Timeline: Candidates who are graduates of the RI Municipal Police Training Academy or accredited academies (lateral candidates): Application review is ongoing; may be invited for an interview. Entry-level candidates: Application review is ongoing; physical and written assessments administered by Fit 2 Serve (see fit2serve ri.com). Certifications valid for one year (physical) and two years (written). Email certifications to dps_hiring@brown.edu if already obtained. Successful candidates may be invited for an interview within two weeks of assessments.
