Responsibilities
Perform professional legal research and related clerical/administrative work in preparing memoranda, opinions, or orders for a judge;
Review, study, research, and annotate laws, court decisions, documents, opinions, briefs, and related legal authorities;
Prepare briefs, legal memoranda, statements of issues, draft opinions and orders with appropriate suggestions or recommendations to the judge;
Compile references on laws and decisions necessary for legal determinations;
Confer with the judge on legal questions and preparation of orders;
Attend court sessions to hear testimony, maintain case records, and assist in jury instruction preparation;
May perform courtroom duties, record testimony or arguments, provide bailiff services, and transcribe court proceedings if required;
May maintain a law library collection.
Qualifications
A Juris Doctorate is required.
Legal research experience.
Excellent writing skills.
Knowledge of general and state law, established precedent, and sources of legal reference.
Knowledge of trial court practices, rules, and procedures.
Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing, with diverse groups;
Ability to research complex legal problems and apply legal principles;
Ability to represent the court respectfully and establish productive working relationships;
Ability to transcribe audio, if required, and to operate word processing and legal research software;
Ability to operate electronic recording equipment for trial proceedings.
