Job Description - Law Clerk I (25142158) A new employee to the Judicial Branch will serve a one-year probationary period. The successful applicant will be subject to a criminal background check. Travel may be required and working hours may include evenings and weekends. Perform professional legal research and related clerical/administrative work in preparation of memoranda, opinions, or orders for a judge. Work under the general supervision of a judge; review through conferences and written reports. Review, study, research, and annotate laws, court decisions, documents, opinions, briefs, and related legal authorities. Prepare briefs, legal memoranda, statements of issues, draft opinions and orders with appropriate recommendations to the judge. Compile references on laws and decisions necessary for legal determinations. Confer with the judge concerning legal questions and the preparation of orders. Attend court sessions to hear testimony, record case information, and maintain court records; assist in preparing jury instructions. May perform courtroom duties including recording testimony and providing bailiff services; may transcribe court proceedings as required; may maintain a law library. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of general and state law, established precedent, and legal reference sources. Knowledge of trial court practices, rules, and procedures. Clear and concise oral and written communication with diverse audiences. Ability to research complex legal problems, apply legal principles, and represent the court respectfully. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships; ability to transcribe audio tapes if required; proficiency with word processing and legal research software; ability to operate electronic recording equipment for court proceedings. Minimum Qualifications
