Assistant Engineer Stationary, Grade II (Provisional)
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is a stationary engineering position involving the operation, maintenance, and repair of heating, generating, ventilating, and refrigerating equipment. At some locations, the work may also involve maintenance and repairs of plumbing and electrical systems. The employee reports directly to and works under the general supervision of a Chief Engineer - Stationary, Stationary Engineer - First Class, or, in the case of Monroe Community College, the Director of Building Maintenance. Direct supervision may be exercised over the work of an Assistant Engineer-Stationary III or Assistant Engineer Stationary-Trainee. Does related work as required.
Responsibilities
Operates, maintains, and repairs heating, generating, ventilating, and refrigerating equipment
Maintains and repairs auxiliary equipment such as sewage systems, kitchen and laundry equipment, hot water heaters, and electrical generators
Observes steam, vacuum, water, and other meters and gauges to determine the operating condition of equipment
Keeps records of fuel and water consumption, steam produced, and other operating data
Performs tests on boiler water, condensate return water, or chill water to detect the presence of harmful biological or chemical substances
Adds chemicals to boiler water, condensate return water, or chill water to combat harmful biological or chemical substances
Exercises direct supervision over Assistant Engineer-Stationary III or Assistant Engineer-Stationary-Trainee, where applicable
WHEN ASSIGNED TO A LOCATION WHICH CONTAINSGENERATING EQUIPMENT, THE INCUMBENT ALSO:
Controls the generation of a continuous supply of steam by regulating the amount of fuel fed to each fire
Operates equipment such as regulating starting devices, adjustment levers, and throttles to start, stop, and regulate the speed of pumps, boiler injectors, blowers, and auxiliary equipment
Inspects, lubricates, and repairs equipment such as boilers, oil feed burners, stokers, pumps, motors, and associated equipment
WHEN ASSIGNED TO A LOCATION WHICH USES TRANSPORTED STEAM FOR HEATING AND REFRIGERATION, THE INCUMBENT ALSO:
Inspects the facility to ensure proper operation of fans and pumps in machinery rooms, proper reduction of incoming steam at steam traps, proper operation of refrigeration equipment, and acceptable condition of cooling towers and related equipment
Maintains, lubricates, and repairs equipment such as steam traps, steam lines, pumps, motors, fans, refrigeration units, heating and cooling coils, filters, and associated equipment
Operates such equipment as steam turbines, refrigeration units, electrical generators, and pneumatic control panels
Requirements Minimum Qualifications:
Must currently hold the Monroe County civil service title Assistant Engineer Stationary, Grade II, or be reachable on the current eligible list for this title, or meet the below minimum requirements for a provisional or temporary appointment, if offered: Graduation from high school or the possession of an equivalency diploma, plus two (2) years of full-time or its part-time equivalent experience in the operation and maintenance of high-pressure steam and refrigeration lines.
NOTE: Where education is lacking, experience in any of the following areas may be substituted on a year-for-year basis:
A) Operation and maintenance of high-pressure steam and refrigeration lines
B) Operation of a refrigeration plant
C) A related skilled trade (i.e., pipefitting, plumbing, electrical work, millwright, masonry, carpentry, general mechanical repair ONLY)
Special Requirements:
Possession of a Second-class Stationary Engineer's license issued by the Examining Board of Stationary Engineers and Refrigerator Operators.
Depending on the position duties, candidates for employment with Monroe County Government will be required to pass a pre-employment drug test.
Preferred Qualifications:
Bilingual and able to read, write, and speak Spanish, or other languages, proficiently

The posted salary range represents the full salary scale for this position, which includes all pay steps within the range. The starting salary for all new hires is typically at the entry-level figure, as determined by the step placement of the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Progression through the range occurs over time based on established criteria such as length of service and performance. This range is provided to give applicants an understanding of the potential earnings over the course of a career in this role.
