Job Description and Duties Under the direction of a Senior Bridge Engineer (Supervisor) in Structure Construction (SC), Division of Engineering Services (DES), the Transportation Engineer (Civil) classification is the entry, working and journeyman level of professional engineering work in Caltrans. The incumbent performs a wide variety of professional engineering work in either an office or field setting; as incumbents progress in experience they will be assigned more difficult work. This work is performed on highway construction projects involving bridges, buildings, walls, barriers, drainage structures, sign structures and appurtenances. The incumbent works as a field engineer to ensure contractors build structures in compliance with the contract documents (Standard Plans, Standard Specifications, contract plans and Special Provisions). May act as an Assistant Structure Representative or Assistant Resident Engineer/Resident Engineer on construction projects.
Candidates are required to review the Minimum Qualifications (MQs) for this classification. If you meet MQs under Pattern II and require the TE Civil in‑person written hurdle exam, DO NOT TAKE the TE Civil online exam prior to passing the written hurdle. Candidates who take the TE Civil online exam prior to passing the written hurdle may negatively impact their hiring eligibility. Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the Transportation Engineer (Civil) exam. For those who do not have current eligibility (e.g., transfer, permissive reinstatement, or voluntary demotions) and/or who will be new to state civil services employment, you must be on the state examination list to be eligible for these positions. Working Conditions Structure Representation on projects where the nature of the work is predominately structural, e.g., bridges and tall walls, Streets and Highways Code Section 137.6 will apply. The possession and maintenance of a valid professional engineer's license in the State of California is required. The Caltrans Transportation Engineer (Civil) Rotation Program is a mandatory 24‑ to 33‑month rotation assignment for all permanent, full‑time Transportation Engineer (Civil) employees that have completed their probationary period. The program provides opportunities for employees to rotate through diverse project delivery functional units, including mandatory core assignments in Design and Construction and a mandatory elective assignment. Assignments typically range from 6 to 12 months and may involve travel throughout the state.
