Performs responsible technically skilled work in a comprehensive municipal law enforcement department. Responsibilities extend to working an assigned shift of uniformed patrol, as well as criminal investigations, recording and reporting activities, and other administrative functions as assigned. Work includes substantial contribution to the department's community involvement activities and programs. Work is performed under minimal supervision with considerable latitude in the use of initiative and independent judgment. Position relies on experience to determine the best approach by using department policies and procedures.

Prepares a variety of logs, records and reports relating to uniformed patrol activities, arrests performed during assigned shift, and evidence logged or submitted in support of and attesting to subject(s) detainment or placement in jail. Maintains contact with unit Sergeant for the effective coordination of law enforcement and investigation activities, and for the purpose of providing mutual assistance during emergency situations or critical incidents. Participates in investigating criminal law violations occurring within the City limits (i.e. obtaining evidences, compiling information regarding crimes, preparing cases for filing of charges, testifying in court, etc.). Works a uniformed shift in the performance of security patrols, traffic control, investigations, and first aid at accidents and detection, investigation and arrest of persons involved in crimes or misconduct. Patrols to serve and protect City streets, waterways, parks, commercial and residential areas; preserves the peace and enforces the law; controls vehicular traffic; prevents or detects and investigates misconduct involving misdemeanors, felonies and other law violations. Responds to emergency radio calls and investigates accidents, robberies, civil disturbances, domestic disputes, fights, drunkenness, missing children, prowlers, abuse of drugs, and other incidents; takes appropriate law enforcement actions accordingly. Interrogates suspects, witnesses and drivers; preserves evidence; arrests violators; investigates and renders assistance at scene of vehicular accidents; summons ambulances and other law enforcement vehicles; takes measurements and draws diagrams of accident scenes. Conducts follow-up investigations of crimes committed during assigned shift; seeks out and questions victims, witnesses and suspects; develops leads and tips; searches scenes of crimes for clues; analyzes and evaluates evidence and arrests offenders; prepares cases for giving testimony and testifies in court proceedings. Serves warrants, summonses, subpoenas, civil and other official papers. Answers questions from the general public; refers the public to persons or agencies which can provide further assistance as required. Maintains law enforcement weapons and equipment in functional and presentable condition; assists in performing general maintenance and cleaning of departmental apparatus, vehicles, equipment, furnishings, and structures as needed. Maintains required level of proficiency in the use of firearms, less lethal weapons, defensive tactics, and evasive action/driving skills. Attends shift meetings, seminars, and training sessions as required to remain knowledgeable of operations and promote job performance. Responds to major emergencies and critical incidents; works collaboratively with internal departments and external agencies, thereby ensuring effective/efficient response. Maintains current knowledge of trends and developments in the technical fields of law enforcement, investigative services, community policing, and criminal intelligence. Must be able to provide truthful testimony in a court of law and must also be deemed credible by a court of law. High school diploma or GED, associate's degree in law enforcement, criminal justice, criminology or related field preferred; or an equivalent combination of education, certification, training, and/or experience. Must have a valid Florida driver's license. Must qualify for Equivalency of Training Certification and obtain State of Florida Police Officer certification through the Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission (CJSTC) within 1 year of date of hire. May be required to have or obtain additional formal industry certification(s) based on area of assignment. Candidate is subject to interview(s), medical testing (including drug screening), and a comprehensive background investigation. Knowledge of the operational, equipment, and facilities standards necessary to maintain a state of readiness for response to law enforcement matters, critical incidents, and other emergencies necessitating a law enforcement presence. Knowledge of department policies and procedures for the preparation, production and maintenance of reports, documentation and records. Knowledge of the incident command system, mass casualty incident protocols, and the field operations guidelines applicable to the nature, extent, and type of incident. Skill in the proper and safe use of assigned firearms, other less lethal weapons, and defensive tactics. Skill in working independently and following through with assignments with minimal direction. Ability to assess scene conditions, recognize current and potential safety hazards, and proceed with response in a manner to protect personal, team, and life safety. Ability to monitor progress in managing an incident, evaluate effectiveness of current strategies, and adjust response strategies accordingly. Ability to operate a computer using Microsoft Office products (Word, Outlook, and Excel) and applicable department/organizational specific software. Ability to research, compile and develop clear, concise and accurate reports and associated documentation to facilitate effective decision making. Ability to articulate, demonstrate and train others concerning current laws, standards, policies and procedures. Ability to exercise sound judgment and maintain confidentiality regarding critical and sensitive information, records, and reports. Ability to establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Ability to provide exceptional internal and external customer service. Ability to regularly attend work and arrive punctually for designated work schedule. Ability to enforce applicable codes and regulatory standards with firmness, impartiality, and tact. OTHER REQUIREMENTS PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Depending on functional area of assignment, tasks involve the regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work and may require occasional lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of heavy objects or materials (up to 80 pounds). Tasks that require moving objects of significant weight require the assistance of another person and/or use of proper techniques and moving equipment.
ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS: Tasks are regularly performed inside and/or outside with potential exposure to adverse environmental conditions (e.g., dirt, cold, rain, fumes).
SENSORY REQUIREMENTS: Some tasks require manual dexterity, in addition to visual and hearing acuity. Some tasks may involve identifying and distinguishing colors.
