We are seeking an experienced, self-motivated and results-driven individual to fulfill a highly skilled position as a Territory Underwriter Specialist or Underwriter Specialist Senior. As an Underwriter for our Northeast Regional operation, you’ll market and underwrite Sentry’s products and services to select Commercial Lines independent agents and brokers. You will manage and coordinate the sales and placement of middle market business in a wide variety of classes and lines of business. Based on qualifications and experience, this position can be filled as a Territory Underwriter Specialist, a Underwriter Specialist Senior, or an Underwriter Specialist. The ideal candidate for the Territory Underwriter Specialist will be located in Albany, NY or Maine and the ideal candidate for the Underwriter Specialist or Underwriter Specialist Senior will work in a hybrid model and report to our Regional office location in Windsor, CT. Responsibilities
Solicit accounts through appointed commercial lines independent agents and/or selected agents/brokers, or in response to inquiries from prospective clients, or referrals. Prospect potential new agencies and coordinate agency appointments, agency evaluation/review and oversee agency activity. Analyze quality and quantity of risks underwritten and manage a book of business within current authority levels. Initiate and implement market development programs to support and enhance market segmentation, penetration, sales and profitability. Evaluate prospective accounts and independent agencies to determine acceptability; work with management, Underwriting, Loss Control and Claims in determining acceptability of the risk and services needed. Serve as primary contact with assigned accounts and agencies; provide service to and work with Loss Control, Claims and Operations to deliver that service. Develop and maintain relationships, procedures and contacts for assigned business products, accounts and agencies. Provide comprehensive sales expertise to independent agencies to increase production. Develop rapport with agents to develop acceptable and profitable business. Assist in development of premium goals by agency and monitor agency results. Promote Sentry products and services to existing and potential customers. Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience Minimum of 5 years of multi-line middle market underwriting experience handling accounts in construction, manufacturing, wholesale, real estate, and service industries Knowledge of the New England marketplace, and preferably existing or past relationships with larger independent agents Previous technical insurance experience, preferably with marketing Experience with underwriting large complex accounts Exceptional communication and relationship building skills Strong business and pipeline development skills Ability to meet travel requirements of at least 20% of the time for prospecting new business opportunities, meeting with insureds during safety inspections, and participating in mid-year claims review meetings Ability to travel and have a valid driver’s license with the ability to maintain an acceptable motor vehicle record What You’ll Receive
