The Construction Controller is responsible for managing all financial aspects of the company’s construction operations, ensuring accuracy in job cost reporting, financial forecasting, and compliance with GAAP and industry regulations. This role oversees the accounting team and partners closely with project managers, executives, and external stakeholders to maintain fiscal discipline across multiple concurrent projects.
Key Responsibilities
Oversee all general ledger, job cost, accounts payable/receivable, payroll, and financial reporting functions.
Prepare and analyze monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
Maintain accurate job cost accounting systems and ensure timely reporting of project financial performance.
Develop and monitor budgets, forecasts, and cash flow projections.
Reconcile and analyze project costs, commitments, and profitability by project and division.
Job Costing & Project Support
Work with project managers to track budgets, change orders, and cost-to-complete forecasts.
Review and approve project billings, subcontractor pay applications, and lien releases.
Ensure contract compliance and accurate revenue recognition per project terms.
Implement and maintain robust internal controls to ensure the integrity of project financial data.
Compliance & Risk Management
Ensure compliance with all GAAP, tax, and construction accounting standards.
Coordinate annual financial audits and liaise with external auditors, banks, and bonding companies.
Oversee insurance, bonding, and licensing documentation related to financial operations.
Develop and maintain company accounting policies, procedures, and best practices.
Leadership & Process Improvement
Supervise and mentor accounting staff, fostering professional growth and cross-functional collaboration.
Drive process improvements and system automation to increase efficiency and accuracy.
Partner with senior leadership to provide strategic financial insights for decision-making and long-term planning.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA or CMA preferred).
Minimum 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 3 years in a Controller or senior accounting role within the construction industry.
Strong understanding of construction job cost accounting, WIP reporting, and contract billing.
Experience with construction ERP/accounting systems (e.g., Viewpoint Vista, Sage 300, or similar).
Excellent analytical, organizational, and leadership skills.
Proven ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, project-driven environment.
