Blum Construction . Overview Blum is seeking an experienced and highly detail-oriented Assistant Controller to join our team. The position provides a clear growth path into the Controller role, allowing leadership, technical expertise, and strategic thinking in preparation for broader responsibilities. The Assistant Controller will aid in the oversight of all accounting and financial operations, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and timely reporting. This role supports strategic decision-making, maintains financial integrity, and drives operational efficiency within a growing construction organization. Over time, with proven success, this role will transition into full Controller responsibilities, including department leadership, financial strategy, and executive-level reporting. Responsibilities Financial Reporting & Compliance: Ensure accuracy and precision in financial reporting, reconciliations, and forecasting; establish and monitor internal controls to safeguard assets and maintain compliance with accounting standards, tax laws, and regulatory requirements; review and approve reports for completeness, consistency, and clarity prior to distribution; maintain up-to-date documentation of financial policies, procedures, and audit responses. Operational Finance: Oversee the monthly close process and ensure timely and accurate financial reporting across all entities; coordinate the annual financial audit and manage responses to ad hoc audit and compliance requests; lead and manage payroll, accounts payable/receivable, and general accounting functions; support budgeting and forecasting in collaboration with CFO, Controller, and senior leadership; manage daily cash and treasury functions, including reserves and liquidity strategies; provide accurate quarterly financial reporting to banks, bonding agents, and other stakeholders; monitor expenditures, identify cost-saving opportunities, and implement efficiency improvements; ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local tax authorities; oversee subcontractor financial review processes for prequalification purposes; manage employee retirement plan administration, including 401(k) compliance and audit testing; maintain accurate ledgers, reporting tools, and accounting records in alignment with company objectives. Leadership & Strategic Support: Provide financial guidance to business leaders in support of company-wide strategic and operational goals; develop and mentor a high-performing finance team; partner with the CFO, Controller, and executive leadership to develop and monitor financial KPIs; maintain strong relationships with banks, bonding companies, financial advisors, and other key stakeholders; build cross-functional relationships to support collaboration and informed decision-making; take on additional responsibilities and projects to support the transition into broader Controller responsibilities. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required; CPA or MBA strongly preferred. Minimum of 7 years of progressive accounting/finance experience, including at least 3 years in a leadership role. Prior experience in the construction industry or a closely related sector is strongly preferred. Strong technical knowledge of GAAP, tax laws, and regulatory compliance. Proficiency with financial reporting systems, ERP platforms, and advanced Excel skills. Demonstrated leadership and team development capabilities. Exceptional analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
