2025 Benefits Guide Interpreters perform a wide variety of language interpretation activities on an assigned and as-needed basis for the Superior Courts of California and for parties to proceedings, including witnesses, defendants, attorneys, other court personnel, and the public. Distinguishing Characteristics This is a single-level classification. Employees perform consecutive and simultaneous interpretation of courtroom proceedings and other related interpreting services as needed. here . This recruitment may close at any time based on the needs of the court, and interested applicants are encouraged to apply promptly. Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: Interprets from and into English and the applicable non-English language using simultaneous and consecutive modes at court proceedings and for other court-related departments at the direction of the court. Makes sight translations for the benefit of the court of documents including, but not limited to, court petitions, reports, waivers, felony disposition statement forms, and other documents. Interprets for judges, attorneys, court staff, and other court-related departments at the direction of the court. Notifies the court of any issues or situations that may impede the interpreters' performance. Researches and understands terminology used in court, including legal, technological, scientific, and medical terminology. Reviews the daily docket and receives daily calendar assignments from the Trial Court Interpreter Coordinator, accurately completing daily activity logs or other required documentation. Performs other interpretation duties as assigned, such as providing general court information to the non-English speaking public and processing related documents. Required Skills and Knowledge Orally convey meaning between English and the non-English language using interpretation modes; accuracy is essential, without editing or summarizing. Use correct grammar and vocabulary in both languages. Remain impartial, even in adversarial or emotionally charged situations. Understand legal concepts and forensic terminology in both languages. Be familiar with regional and cultural variations of the language and conduct ongoing terminology research. Operate office equipment and interpretation technology as required. Understand and adhere to California statutes, court rules, and interpreter ethics as outlined in California Rules of Court Rule 984.4. Interact professionally and cooperatively with colleagues and court personnel. Possess a valid driver's license or alternative transportation methods. Maintain a valid certification as a "Certified Court Interpreter" or registration as a Court Interpreter by the Judicial Council of California. Working Conditions Work is performed in courtrooms and related facilities, requiring concentration in a busy environment. Interpreters must adjust to different voices, accents, and speeds, and interact with individuals from diverse backgrounds. Travel within and between counties is required.
