Overview
The Birth Certificate Technician is responsible primarily for the preparation and processing of birth certificates for newborn patients. This position also provides backup for various HIM Department functions requiring advanced knowledge and/or experience in front office duties, release of information, record analysis, and related tasks as described below. Responsibilities
Complete Birth Certificates in accordance with California state regulations using the Electronic Birth Registration System (EBRS) provided by the California Department of Public Health. Prepare Paternity Opportunity Program (POP) documents in conjunction with the birth certificate process. Transmit/file birth certificates with the Vital Records of the County of Los Angeles in a timely manner. Monitor timely receipt of Newborn Screening Program results (PKUs). Assist the Government Audit Coordinator and front office HIM staff as needed. Department-Specific Competencies
Perform Health Information Management receptionist duties, including answering and forwarding telephone calls and mail distribution as appropriate; greet visitors/patients/physicians entering HIM. Process Release of Information requests, including scanning to the electronic medical record. Assist Release of Information/Medicolegal Correspondents as appropriate. Retrieve, prepare, and scan medical records and loose documents for inclusion in the EMR. Retrieve records from offsite storage vendor (e.g., Iron Mountain). Experience & Qualifications
Experience with Cerner PowerChart and Microsoft Office products. HRIT or RHIA credentials may substitute for actual Medicolegal Correspondent & HIM experience; other related experience also considered. Compensation
