About the Position Certified Substance Abuse Counselors

are responsible for providing group and individual sessions and related rehabilitative treatment services to substance abuse students in a residential therapeutic community setting.

Salary Range:

$20-$26/hr

What You Will Do

Lead and participate in group, individual, and therapeutic processes under the supervision of a certified behavioral health professional. Participate with students in determining short and long-range goals and treatment plans.

Conduct welcoming and thorough intake interviews to ensure students’ basic necessities are met. Provide additional support in special circumstances (e.g., quarantine) as necessary.

Serve as a student advocate by providing a hospitable social environment and remaining informed on incoming and continuing students’ individual stories.

Evaluate comprehensive social, legal, and personal histories of students. Interact with family, attorney, probation/parole officers, and other relevant individuals or agencies.

Observe, record, and evaluate changes in appearance, behavior, and demeanor; maintain accurate and timely student records of sensitive nature; evaluate emergencies and take appropriate action.

Learn, maintain, and restore Amity’s standard for physical environments; create a well-organized, diverse, engaging, aesthetically pleasing, and clean living environment for students.

Follow up with students’ daily community living progress; ensure personal necessities are provided and teach how to maintain a clean, inviting living environment.

Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly student activities; develop and maintain skills in preparing, setting up, and hosting Amity community seminars, gatherings, and ceremonies.

Collaborate with the community to define the community, acknowledge accomplishments, and teach the vision and values; support and conduct ceremonies as appropriate.

Attend in-service trainings, workshops, and conferences; pursue ongoing learning in community building and teaching skills.

Prepare reporting and documentation as required by Amity and contract compliance; protect students’ health, safety, welfare, and confidentiality of records.

Provide training and guidance as demonstrations to students and model good work habits.

Assist in the supervision of interns and volunteers.

Participate in community-building activities, faculty staffing, and other duties as required by the position.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

What You Will Bring

AOD/SUDT Certification from a California state-accredited certifying body.

Bachelor’s degree in a behavioral health field and one year of experience in a substance abuse or behavioral health treatment facility OR a High School diploma or equivalent GED, with a combination of behavioral health education and work experience totaling at least two years and knowledge of therapeutic community processes, methods, and design, including small-group dynamics.

Demonstrated ability to relate well to students and supervise faculty.

Understanding of human emotions.

Good verbal and written communication skills.

Ability to maintain sensitivity and objectivity under pressure related to substance abuse students.

Demonstrates proper attitudes and techniques for residential students.

Understanding of causes, symptoms, and effects of substance abuse.
