POSITION SUMMARY Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation is seeking an innovative, forward‑thinking, and flexible Sr Recreation Specialist to embrace our organization’s mission to enhance community wellness through recreation, open space, and natural resources. This lead position will coordinate and implement recreation and leisure programs and activities for our community and ensuring our organization continues to be a strong presence within Mecklenburg County. The program areas will include, but are not limited to after‑school programs, summer camp, school day out programs, and athletics. The incumbent will also be responsible for training and overseeing temporary and part‑time staff and recruiting volunteers to assist with recreation programs. In addition, they will also be instrumental in promoting customer service standards within the facility, engaging in outreach activities with our community and external partners to identify areas for implementation of new and innovative activities, and increasing awareness of and participation in our program offerings. This full‑time position will be based at Berewick Recreation Center and work a flexible schedule to include mornings/daytime, evenings, and weekends on a rotating basis.

PREFFERED QUALIFICATIONS

At least 3 years of experience coordinating and leading recreation programs

Experience leading after‑school, summer camp, and other special event programs

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Assist in supervision of activities in a recreation center or park facility

Develop, evaluate, and lead programs and activities in a recreation center or park facility

Provide customer service and handling of funds in a recreation center or park facility through telephone, emails, web site, social media and walk‑in patrons and customers for information, program registration, center daily use and rentals

Supervise part‑time and temporary employees, including scheduling, coaching and annual reviews

Assist with monitoring the assigned center’s budget, contracts, and compliance

Develop and coordinate a wide range of recreation and leisure programs for a diverse audience

Assist with development of, maintenance repair of equipment and inventory needs

Partner with community leaders to ensure quality programs within the community

Secure instructors and/or volunteers for programs

Advertise programs via radio stations, flyers, Public Service Announcements, banner and internet

Assist with department events

Approve program proposals

Complete monthly safety checklists

Communicate effectively with school site administration if located at a satellite site

Ensure safety of participants/spectators and administer first aid when necessary

Collect fees and take registrations for recreational programs and facility rentals

Handle inquiries and complaints from public

Referee at various sports activities

Provide services as timekeeper, scorekeeper or line‑person at games

May serve as the manager on duty

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum of two (2) years of related experience

Bachelor’s Degree in Park and Recreation Administration, Health and Physical Education, or a related field

Combination of relevant education and relevant experience accepted: Yes

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS Requires a valid North Carolina or South Carolina Driver’s License and County Driving Privileges; CPR/First Aid.

COMPUTER SKILLS Proficient in various computer applications including Microsoft Office Suite.
