SOME (So Others Might Eat) provides material aid and comfort to our vulnerable neighbors in the District of Columbia, helping them to break the cycle of poverty and homelessness through programs and services that save lives, improve lives, and help to transform the lives of individuals and families. We offer our employees a competitive compensation and benefits package that reflects our organizational culture, mission, and core values. The hourly range for this position is $19.46 to $20.58 and is commensurate with experience. Position Description
The Porter is responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of the facilities within the portfolio, providing a comfortable, clean, and dignified home for residents. Duties include cleaning of buildings and grounds and light maintenance. Schedule
Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm (40 hours per week) Required Education
Some high school education or GED; 2+ years of janitorial experience. Experience providing services to low‑income populations, families, and seniors preferred. Required License/Certification
Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license, a reliable vehicle, and personal car liability insurance coverage. This is a contingency of employment; mileage will be reimbursed. Expected Contributions
Follows the maintenance checklist to ensure facilities are safe and presentable Provides regular cleaning of all common areas, bathrooms, lounges, kitchens, etc. Maintains building exterior through regular cleaning and ground maintenance Coordinates daily trash collections, empties trash containers, and manages bulk or regular pickup Maintains inventory of cleaning, maintenance, and building supplies Provides snow and ice removal from walkways Inputs work order into work order system, as needed Performs walk‑thru (move‑in and move‑out) and room inspections on a regular schedule Knowledge / Skills / Abilities
Knowledge of cleaning and maintenance techniques Customer service skills with the ability to communicate with diverse audiences Organized with attention to detail and the ability to work independently Time management skills Basic computer skills Effective communication skills with the ability to read and write Ability to set professional boundaries Reports To
Property Manager Physical Demands
Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds. Requires walking up and down stairs. Stooping, bending, sweeping, and lifting. Position Designation
This position is designated as Safety Sensitive. You may be subject to drug testing before or during your employment with SOME. In this position, you may be disqualified from employment based on the presence of marijuana in test results, even if you possess a medical card authorizing the use of medical marijuana.
