Job Description And Duties The Office of Correctional Safety (OCS) supports the mission of the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. The OCS mission is to protect the public and serve the CDCR investigative and security interests. The OCS is the primary departmental link with allied law enforcement agencies and the California Governor's Office of Emergency Services (CalOES).
The Office of Correctional Safety is comprised of the following sub-units:
Special Service Unit (SSU) Fugitive Apprehension Teams (FAT) Emergency Operations Unit (EOU) Emergency Planning and Management Unit (EPMU) Specialized Technology and Investigations Unit (STI) Criminal Intelligence Analysis Unit (CIAU) Investigative Training Unit (ITU)
In collaboration with the State Threat Assessment Center (STAC), Strategic Analysis Unit Supervisor, the Correctional Sergeant will consistently exercise independence and initiative in performing a variety of consultative and complex sensitive assignments relative to the collection, oversight, development, and appropriate dissemination of correctional intelligence pertaining to situations and activities within the California correctional facilities. The information will be used to inform State leadership on developing situations that could significantly and negatively impact the state of California, and to develop intelligence products that will be disseminated to California State leadership and law enforcement personnel on a need to know basis. The Correctional Sergeant, as a member of the OCS, will fall operationally under the direct supervision of the Senior Special Agent, STI.
This position requires knowledge of the intelligence cycle, institution security and program operations. The selected individual should have experience in creating intelligence bulletins and reports; knowledge and skill in applying analytical and evaluative techniques for developing new or modified criminal analysis work methods, approaches, or procedures; and the ability to identify, evaluate and recommend solutions to complex issues or problems. Briefing and presentation skills are highly desirable.
The California Department of Corrections Rehabilitation (CDCR) Headquarters has implemented a new automated system to streamline the hiring process. Per Department Operations Manual 32010.19.6, specialized units such as OCS may establish a quarterly proficiency course of fire and techniques that meet their specific needs. OCS has established a specialized course of fire and applicable staff assigned to OCS are required to pass this quarterly course of fire with primary and other assigned firearms in order to maintain their assignment to OCS.
