Corrections Officer – State of New Hampshire
Base pay range
$26.24/hr - $34.74/hr This position receives Hazardous Duty Pay of $60 biweekly, which is not included in the salary listed above. The trainee option is available at a pay rate of $25.17 per hour with minimum qualifications required within one year of hire. To perform work as a Corrections Officer in accordance with established rules, regulations, post orders, and specific instructions; maintain professional and personal integrity, ethics, and a positive community standing in and outside the work environment; establish a correctional environment supportive of rehabilitative activities and access to healthcare services reflective of reducing the risks of recidivism. This position works as an armed post. Responsibilities
Maintain security in buildings, towers, and other posts of an adult correctional facility, intervene during emergencies or altercations, and gain physical control of offenders. Supervise, escort, and/or transport the movement of offenders inside and outside the correctional facility; conduct periodic counts and searches of offenders and their living quarters for contraband. Supervise housing units and offenders during work, recreational, and religious activities; conduct health and safety hazards inspections; perform searches to prevent contraband. Search housing, buildings, physical plants, supply areas, and personal property for weapons and contraband following institutional procedures. Interview and obtain statements from victims, witnesses, suspects, and other involved parties; prepare tracking, reports, and documentation for disciplinary and mitigation proceedings. Discuss issues and minor adjustments with offenders; refer more severe concerns to superiors or proper correctional facility staff. Promote rehabilitation by guiding/offering constructive direction and de-escalation during daily duties. Detain offenders as needed using handcuffs and restraints; subdue resisting offenders with approved measures within policy; justify uses of weapons in self-defense as allowed. Perform rescue functions as a first responder within correctional facilities; administer emergency medical aid and coordinate with outside resources as needed. Utilize technological tools (radios, recording devices, computers, security panels, firearms) and protect confidential criminal justice data in information systems. Maintain ongoing training requirements for DOC and NH law enforcement as outlined in NH RSA 106-L, including mental health, ethics, bias, and related topics. Act as ex officio constable with general police powers within the corrections facility when pursuing violations or transporting court-committed residents. Minimum Qualifications
Education/Experience:
Education: High school diploma or GED. Experience: Six months as a Corrections Officer or equivalent in law enforcement, police work, or the military. License/Certification:
Possession of a valid driver’s license. Other Requirements:
Must be at least eighteen (18) years old; ability to use firearms and demonstrate proficiency annually; must complete Corrections Academy training and obtain certification during probation; must pass physical agility test; must pass a comprehensive medical examination at state expense after conditional offer. Trainee Option: Candidates with a high school diploma and no prior experience may be hired in trainee status. Preferred Qualifications
