- State of Tennessee, Department of Correction, Lois M. DeBerry Special Needs Facility, Davidson County. This is an on-site position. A pre-employment drug screen and motor vehicle records check are required. Salary: starting salary of $4,267 per month ($51,204 per year), with increases after 6 months and flex promotion after 12 months. Newly hired Correctional Officers are eligible for a $5,000 sign-on bonus, payable over 18 months. Location: Department of Correction, Lois M. DeBerry Special Needs Facility, Davidson County. Five positions to be filled. Employment type: Full-time. Job function: Other, Information Technology, and Management. Industry: Law Enforcement. This is an on-site position and requires a criminal background check. Expect to disclose criminal history information as part of consideration for the position. Eligibility: Education equivalent to graduation from a standard high school.
Responsibilities
Supervises inmate activities in housing units, dining areas, recreation and work areas; attends to medical, visitation, personal property, and recreational needs of inmates. Inspects and patrols grounds for contraband, unauthorized personnel, and other security risks. Checks in new inmates by assigning accommodations, searching for contraband, issuing clothing, and storing personal property. Observes inmate behavior; counsels with inmates and families about problems; evaluates inmates on room and personal hygiene, attitudes towards staff and inmates; reports to counseling department. Attends staff meetings, disciplinary board meetings, and training for riot control, escape prevention, and first aid. Prepares reports such as daily logs, disciplinary reports, inmate job and pay records, daily inmate counts, and requisitions for office supplies. Operates equipment including two-way radios, firearms, mace, electronic gates, cameras; may operate motor vehicles. Ensures inmate safety through supervision of daily activity; breaks up fights or potentially dangerous situations by persuasion or force as needed. Communicates and enforces existing policies and procedures to others. Necessary Special Qualifications Submit to and pass a pre-employment screening test for illegal drugs. Be willing and able to qualify with, carry, and use assigned weapons. Be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizen; good moral character; complete a criminal history disclosure form; release all records involving criminal history to the appointing authority; supply fingerprint sample for fingerprint-based check. Have no felony conviction or discharge under dishonorable conditions from any branch of the U.S. armed forces. Pass physical examination (per Americans with Disabilities Act) and psychological evaluation; meet essential functions of the position. Possess a valid motor vehicle operator's license where required; complete Tennessee Correction Academy course upon appointment.
