Responsibilities

Participate in the month-end closing process.

Monitor entries in the General Ledger (GL) to ensure appropriate allocation, determine if reclassifications are required, explain variances, and analyze accounts to avoid year-end audit exposure.

Develop and recommend new procedures, processes, and policies for the accounting operations of the assigned function.

Serve as accounting business partner to the assigned function on moderately complex issues.

Analyze, research, and reconcile selected accounts and cost discrepancies; communicate with field associates, corporate support staff, and management to address accounting issues.

Perform statistical and financial analysis and operate with independent judgment when required.

Protect Petco’s accounting data from internal and external sources.

Create complex documents/reports using spreadsheet, database, and accounting software; prioritize and accomplish multiple tasks within established timeframes.

Analyze simple to moderately complex data to determine the appropriate course of action.

Perform accounting duties and control activities to ensure accurate financial results.

Research and analyze data sets and accounts pertaining to the assigned accounting area; prepare month-end journal entries, reconciliations, budgets, forms, reports, and schedules.

Communicate effectively with field partners, corporate support staff, and senior management to address accounting issues with the appropriate partners.

Identify problems, research root causes, and overcome roadblocks to functional success.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

Perform additional duties as required, including special projects and rotation through various accounting functions (e.g., General Accounting, Inventory Accounting, Accounts Payable).

Provide coverage and support for positions across accounting functions; work productively in ambiguity and accept feedback.

Protect confidential information and collaborate to implement process improvements to drive efficiency and profitability.

Seek development opportunities and feedback from senior partners.

Functional Area Accountabilities

Accounts Payable Accounting

— High level reconciliations, vendor setup changes, APOX/SOX controls, journal entries, dispute resolution support.

Accounts Receivable

— Reconciliations, reporting, aging schedules, guidance on issues, journal entries, and knowledge of account ownership.

General Accounting

— GL inquiries, accruals, G&A and utilities analysis, payroll recognition, bank reconciliations, PTO accruals, unclaimed property tracking.

Inventory Accounting (IA)/Vendor Funding

— Interface stock ledger to GL, cost reviews, borrowings base, RMS mapping, inventory activity analysis, Census surveys, stock ledger inquiries.

Lease & Fixed Asset Accounting

— Monthly recurring payments, amortization, prepaid expenses, lease term research, year-end schedules.

Payroll

— PSFT payroll tasks, compensation analysis, and liaising with management and employees.

Physical Inventory Accounting

— Inventory assistance, journal entries, reconciliations, shrink reports, and stock issue analysis.

Sales Audit

— Store close reviews, bank reconciliation oversight, ReSA system maintenance, match controls, and DFS-related entries.

Tax (Corporate and Sales)

— Knowledge of GAAP and IRS differences, quarterly/year-end tax provisions, returns preparation, and support for audited financial statements.

Work Environment The majority of duties are performed indoors in a quiet office environment. Some travel may be required for training. May require work on weekends occasionally.

Education and Experience

A 4-year degree in Accounting/Finance or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.

Understanding of accounting principles equivalent to college-level Intermediate Accounting.

4-year degree or 3–5 years of related work experience for junior or staff accountant level preferred.

English communication skills for working with non-accounting associates; interpersonal skills for interaction with staff and management.

Proficient with Microsoft Office; 10-key by touch; accuracy and attention to detail; trainable on company systems.

Ability to interact with peers and leaders with poise and confidence; analytical thinking and problem-solving abilities.

Preferred Experience

Knowledge of various accounting functional areas; project management capabilities; experience with PeopleSoft is a plus.
