Position Summary The Cost Accountant is responsible for analyzing and monitoring the cooperative’s costs and financial performance across electric, natural gas, and broadband operations. This position ensures accurate allocation of expenses, development of budgets, preparation of financial reports, and compliance with applicable accounting standards and regulatory requirements. The Cost Accountant also manages general ledger accuracy, performs account reconciliations, and ensures financial controls are maintained. This role provides critical data and recommendations to the supervisor and Senior Staff to support effective decision‑making in alignment with cooperative principles.
Essential Responsibilities and Duties
Cost Accounting & Analysis
Collect, classify, and analyze costs related to operations, projects, and capital expenditures.
Prepare and maintain cost allocation models for shared services across business units (electric, natural gas, broadband).
Monitor cost trends and variances, investigating deviations and reporting to management.
Provide detailed analysis to support financial planning, rate discussions, and board reporting.
General Ledger & Reconciliation
Prepare and reconcile monthly bank statements for all cooperative accounts.
Maintain and reconcile general ledger accounts, ensuring accuracy and timely resolution of discrepancies.
Assist with month‑end and year‑end closing processes.
Support preparation of audit workpapers and provide documentation for external auditors.
Budgeting & Forecasting
Assist in development of annual budgets for operating and capital expenditures.
Collaborate with department managers to ensure accurate financial forecasting and reporting.
Track budget‑to‑actual results and provide variance analyses with recommendations for corrective action.
Financial Reporting & Compliance
Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports in compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
Ensure compliance with all applicable federal and state laws, including Illinois utility accounting requirements and IRS regulations.
Assist in preparation of regulatory filings, audits, and tax reports as required.
Maintain internal controls over accounting processes to safeguard cooperative assets.
Other Responsibilities
Support the CFO in special financial projects, debt compliance, and board‑level reporting.
Assist in evaluating cost efficiency of cooperative programs and initiatives.
Perform other duties as assigned and qualified.
Accountabilities
Accuracy and timeliness of financial and cost reports.
Reliability of budget, forecast, and variance analysis.
Compliance with GAAP, IRS, Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC), and cooperative policy.
Effective collaboration with internal departments and external auditors/regulators.
Contribution to cooperative financial stability and member satisfaction.
Working Conditions
Standard office environment with routine use of computers.
Occasional work outside of normal hours during budget, audit, or board reporting periods.
Occasional day and overnight travel may be required for training, conferences, or audits.
Position requires extended periods of sitting, computer use, and repetitive motions.
May occasionally lift up to 25 pounds.

Requirements Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Accounting; Master’s degree or CPA/CMA preferred.
Two (2) years of cost accounting or financial analysis experience, preferably in the utility or cooperative sector.
Strong knowledge of GAAP, utility accounting practices, and cooperative principles.
Proficiency with accounting software, spreadsheets, databases, and reporting tools.
Excellent organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple projects.
Strong oral and written communication skills, with ability to explain complex financial data clearly.
High level of integrity, confidentiality, and professional judgment.
Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
Knowledge of relevant federal and Illinois state laws impacting accounting, tax reporting, and employment (e.g., FLSA, IRS Code, ICC requirements.)
