Staff Accountant – General Ledger

Nature of Work This is professional level accounting/analytical work in the City’s Finance Department. Employees in this class are responsible for performing accounting and finance functions in assigned areas that include general ledger, financial analysis and reporting, bank reconciliations, journal entries, general accounting, work‑paper preparation, and specific projects assigned. General supervision may be received from a Division Head or the Accounting Manager. An employee in this classification is expected to learn the full scope of duties outlined below and exercise considerable judgment in solving the more complex financial transactions and analysis using generally accepted accounting principles and standards.
Illustrative Examples of Essential Duties
Prepare, review, and enter journal entries
Assist with compilation of department year‑end reports
Analyze and reconcile accounts, financial records, and prepare detailed accounting reports and work papers
Assist with compiling and editing statements, notes, and schedules for financial statements
Prepare and reconcile a variety of bank reconciliations
Prepare and input City capital‑assets entries
Analyze capital expenditures for additions to capital assets
Record periodic capital‑assets depreciation and update the computerized capital‑assets system
Assist with preparation of detailed schedules summarizing capital assets by department
Assist with general ledger maintenance as assigned
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with elected officials, coworkers, the press, the general public, and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, regardless of race, religion, age, sex, disability, political affiliation, gender identity, or sexual orientation
Serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of all City ethics and conflicts of interest policies. Strong understanding of ethical behavior is required.
Maintain regular and punctual attendance
Report to work as directed during an emergency as an essential employee of the City of Miami Beach
Maintain current all required safety and other mandatory trainings
Perform related work as required
Minimum Requirements
REQUIRED:
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a closely related field
DESIRED:
Two (2) or more years full‑time accounting and/or financial experience
Government experience
Physical Requirements
Use of sensory skills to communicate and interact with employees and the public via telephone and personal contact
Physical capability to effectively use and operate office equipment such as word processor, calculator, copier, and fax machine
No significant standing, walking, moving, climbing, carrying, bending, or kneeling
Some crawling, reaching, handling, sitting, standing, pushing, and pulling
