Job Overview
Job Title: Fiber Technician Reports To: Lead Communications Technician or Superintendent Job Summary:
The Fiber Technician is responsible for all aspects of fiber work including installing, terminating, testing, and splicing. Responsibilities
Cabling and termination: perform basic copper termination, install work area outlets, terminate CAT 3 & CAT 5 jacks, mount faceplates and surface mount boxes, and adhere to labeling standards. Closet installations: build closets by mounting and installing backboards, cross-connects, racks, patch panels, fiber optic components, and hardware; install grounding for racks, equipment, and cable as required. Terminations and testing: complete IDC connections (e.g., terminate 110/66 blocks and patch panels); perform testing and continuity checks on horizontal and riser cables; troubleshoot opens, shorts, and crossed/transposed pairs; test using volt-ohm meter. Fiber connectors and cables: install LC, SC, ST, FC, FDDI, SMA, and MPO/MTP connectors for multimode and single-mode fiber; terminate simplex and duplex jumper cords; terminate and breakout outside plant (loose tube) fiber (e.g., Corning/Commscope; 3DNX); terminate indoor tight buffered multimode and single-mode fiber. Cable management and documentation: install fan-out kits, calculate end-to-end loss budgets according to TIA/EIA standards, and complete all IES paperwork (timesheets, material transfers, work orders, change orders, Job Blog, tool transfers) accurately and on time. Testing and troubleshooting: use OTDR and Fluke DTX 180; identify and correct problems end-to-end and network-wide; perform mechanical and fusion splicing; handle building entrance splices, maintenance space splices, and direct buried splices. Physical and Mental Requirements
Must be self-motivated, professional, and capable of contributing to project process improvements. Promote company culture and mission; act as liaison with customer representatives; possess problem-solving, critical thinking, and communication skills (read, write, and give oral presentations). Physical ability to work at heights, on ladders, in confined spaces; lift up to 50 pounds and move up to 75 pounds; color vision, ability to read small print, and audible signal recognition. Willingness and ability to travel within the branch or regional territory as needed. Education, Certification, License, and Skill Requirements
High School diploma or GED required; proficient with listed tools. Proficient at terminating all connector types and methods for SMF and MMF systems (Unicam, anaerobic, heat-cure). Experience with testing and troubleshooting MMF & SMF systems (OTDR & PMLS). Must meet IES driving standards; preferred 3-5 years of fiber experience; preferred certifications (Corning/FOA); preferred data center installation experience; preferred mechanical and fusion splice experience; preferred OSP/confined space entry experience. Tools: screwdrivers, drywall saw, torpedo level, tape measure, snips, pliers, hammer, wrench set, cable stripper, flashlight, gloves; punch tools with 110/66 block blades; 6/8 position combo crimp tool; Krone/3M/BIX accessories. Must possess a valid driver’s license with a good driving record; own a truck, van, or SUV; extensive knowledge of CATV equipment. Minimum 2-4 years of plant maintenance background or fiber optic experience; ability to read and understand manufacturers’ manuals; operate specialized test and fiber optic splicing equipment; self-motivated and able to work well independently.
