Overview
Tax Manager, Core Tax Services at BDO USA. Advises clients on the tax implications of business objectives, evaluates actions to lessen tax burden and cost of compliance, and serves as primary client contact for complex tax issues. Applies knowledge to understand potential tax issues and communicates potential risks and changes in tax policy. Involves marketing, networking, and business development within area of specialization and may provide written tax advice to clients. Responsibilities
Tax Compliance: ensure client compliance with authorities while minimizing tax and reporting burdens; ensure firm policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual (TQM) are followed; conduct top-level review of T/R and resolve tax issues with the client; communicate issues identified in tax accrual reviews; plan and review the tax process including budgeting and staffing, monitoring engagement progress and time versus budget, timely billing and management of out-of-scope activity, and timely collection of A/R; manage client relationships and expectations; provide timely advice to clients. Research: identify when research is needed; frame issues for research; report analyses clearly; apply firm standards for WTA and tax returns; involve firm specialists as appropriate. ASC 740 (FAS 109 and FIN 48) Tax Accruals: apply Firm policies and TQM for FAS 109 and FIN 48; explain components of the income tax provision and uncertain tax positions; coordinate with Assurance for tax accrual reviews including budget, scope, and delivery dates; utilize and manage STS as needed. Tax Consulting: develop, recommend, and implement methods to maximize client benefits by reducing current and future taxes; consider CTS and STS specialties; develop work plans including STS assistance on ongoing projects; serve as a technical resource; ensure client service teams comply with Written Tax Advice (WTA); provide exam support; frame projects for delegation to seniors and associates. Tax Specialization: develop in-depth understanding of issues in one or more areas of taxation; may organize internal CPE training; Strategy Development: introduce and develop new ideas to reduce taxes or expenses; review tax studies and offer clients alternative actions; identify and leverage lessons from prior projects to improve processes. Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Bachelor’s degree required (Accounting, Finance, Economics or Statistics preferred); Master’s in Accountancy or Taxation preferred Five or more years of relevant tax experience; prior supervisory experience required; industry expertise in one or more tax specialty preferred CPA, Attorney, or Enrolled Agent (or equivalent) required; additional professional designations from related fields preferred Proficiency with Microsoft Office; experience with tax research databases and tax compliance software preferred Superior verbal and written communication skills; ability to delegate effectively; strong analytical, research, and decision-making abilities; team-oriented; capable of developing and managing a tax professional team; ability to draft written tax advice and maintain client relationships; executive presence to interact with clients on issues and resolutions Experience & Licenses
Five (5) or more years of relevant tax experience; prior supervisory experience required CPA certification, Attorney license (admitted in U.S. jurisdiction), or EA certification required Salary & Location
Range by location includes: California $112,000 - $150,000; Colorado $104,500 - $115,500; Illinois $105,000 - $130,000; Maryland $113,000 - $120,000; Massachusetts $120,000 - $127,000; Minnesota $90,000 - $120,000; New Jersey $115,000 - $140,000; NYC/Long Island/Westchester $125,000 - $160,000; Washington $107,400 - $126,900; Washington DC $120,000 - $140,000 About Us
