Overview DV Family Law Attorney position within NMIC's Legal, Organizing, & Advocacy department. This hybrid role focuses on providing consultation and representation to immigrant survivors of intimate partner violence, complementing a holistic array of services offered to victim/survivors at the agency. The attorney collaborates with a team to connect clients to internal and external services to help stabilize them in the community.

Location & Schedule Main Office: 45 Wadsworth Avenue, New York, NY 10033. FLSA: Exempt. Work Model: Hybrid position requiring in-person work 3 days per week at the main office in Manhattan.

Reports to Assistant Director for Immigration & DV Services

Summary of Responsibilities The family law attorney will provide consultation and representation to primarily immigrant survivors of intimate partner violence, thereby complementing a holistic array of services offered to victim/survivors at the agency. The attorney will work with a team of staff to connect clients to internal and external services required to stabilize the client in the community.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

Provide holistic legal representation and advocacy to victims of domestic violence in family law matters (family offense, custody/visitation, child support) with some DV-based immigration advocacy.

Collaborate with NMIC’s Domestic Violence Project which provides counseling, crisis intervention, case management and advocacy.

Coordinate access for victims to NMIC's other civil legal services addressing DV needs with housing, benefits, consumer, and other areas of law.

Provide internal training and technical assistance on matters related to family law and the intersection of DV needs with other civil legal services needs.

Compile and analyze programmatic statistical information for program reports.

Participate in community-based initiatives, taskforces and other outreach activities addressing the intersection of domestic violence and family law.

Attend staff meetings and other team meetings as required.

Qualifications

J.D. Law Degree with admission to the New York State Bar.

Relevant family law and courtroom experience required.

Bilingual Spanish/English required.

Experience working with victims of intimate partner violence and/or sexual assault preferred.

Competency and knowledge of trauma-informed lawyering.

A demonstrated commitment to social and racial justice issues; understanding of challenges facing immigrant communities, communities of color, and low- and moderate-income families.

Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Exceptional collaborative skills and the ability to interact with other office staff at all levels in a fast-paced environment, sometimes under pressure.

Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

Salary & Benefits NMIC offers a competitive salary based on experience and education, plus a comprehensive benefits package: medical, dental, life, and disability insurance; paid time off including 20 vacation days, 15 sick days, 5 personal days, and 12 agency holidays; a 401k with agency contribution; and other benefits.

Salary:

$83,000 – $91,000
