THE COMMUNITY Incorporated on July 19, 1941, the City of Windsor Heights, Iowa is located in Polk County and the City is part of the Des Moines, Iowa metropolitan area. With a population of approximately 5,252 living in approximately 2,289 households, the City encompasses 1.41 square miles of land with bordering communities including Clive to the west, Des Moines to the east, Urbandale to the north, and West Des Moines to the south. The community enjoys a mix of residential, multifamily, and commercial properties. The City is home to a cadre of big box stores, and our University Avenue corridor is bustling with business. Other small businesses, restaurants, and services are also present within the City. In addition, the DART hub located in the parking lot of Walmart and Sam’s Club is the busiest Metropolitan DART hub outside of the Downtown Des Moines corridor, leading to high influxes of pedestrian and transient traffic. While the resident population is only 5,252 – the community profile increases our day-to-day population significantly and adds complexity to our law enforcement role in the community. The Windsor Heights Police Department provides 24-hour, full-service law enforcement coverage to the City of Windsor Heights. The mission of the Police Department is to safeguard the lives and property of those we serve, to reduce the incidence and fear of crime, and to enhance public safety while working with the community to improve their quality of life. The goal of the Police Department is to build strong community partnerships and provide quality and professional policing services to collaborate toward the preservation of peace, order, safety, and problem resolution. Police Department personnel are held to the highest standards of integrity and ethics. The Police Department has an array of roles within the community. These roles include proactive patrols, targeted patrols, quality of life issue mediation/resolution, reactive responses to crimes and disorder, investigation of crimes, and value-added services such as identification fingerprinting and accident reporting. Officers are likely to be the first contact for those living and visiting our community who encounter any type of problem. Officers mitigate many issues throughout their workday including mental health issues, substance abuse issues, neighborhood disputes, and other non-criminal complaints. The Windsor Heights Police Department currently employs fourteen full-time staff members, thirteen of whom are certified/sworn officers. We enjoy strong community support and a command staff who understands the challenges faced by officers daily. Windsor Heights Police Officers are true community partners making the City of Windsor Heights a great and safe place to live, work, and play! 10-Hour Schedule with Four Days Off Every Other Weekend! Patrol officers currently work a 10-hour shift schedule with set days off. Officers are assigned to one of two “crews” based on their days off. Days off rotations are Monday / Tuesday and Thursday / Friday. In addition, officers are off-duty every other weekend (Saturday / Sunday). Windsor Heights Police Officers are allowed to wear beards and have tattoos fitting within the established department policy! Our team is provided all the equipment necessary to remain safe while serving their community and, after the first full year of employment, our officers enjoy an annual uniform allowance to be used on uniform-related items. Overtime and Off-Duty Opportunities! Overtime and off-duty assignment opportunities are available throughout the year, including Iowa Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau (GTSB) enforcement efforts, off-duty security assignments, and special event coverage. Perks, Benefits, and Time Off! On-duty physical fitness time and an onsite workout facility and fitness incentives; Plentiful training opportunities; Twenty-four days of paid time off each year (accrues at 10.16 hours per pay period); PTO payout whereby officers can “cash out” excess PTO up to four times per year; Fully Funded Short-Term Disability Insurance; Longevity after 5-years of service; Low-cost health insurance ($65.00 / mo Family: $26.00 / mo Single); Deferred Compensation Plan after three years of employment; Education Incentives and Tuition Reimbursement opportunities.
