Job Summary Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office Detention Facility Deputy Sheriff (POST Academy Candidate). Be invited to attend the July 2026 Colorado Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Academy. Complete the Academy, one‑year detention assignment, then eligible for patrol.

Key Pay & Benefits

Hourly salary $36.19 → $75,275.20 annually (step program, 6½ years to top).

Full benefits: medical, dental, retirement, paid time off.

Retirement: 9.00% salary, 9.75% County match and 6.2% Social Security.

Essential Functions

Ensure health, safety and security of inmates, staff, visitors and the public.

Maintain interior and exterior security of the facility.

Conduct inmate escorts, transports and accurate head counts.

Receive, process and release inmates; supervise inmate activities.

Support investigations of incidents and criminal offenses; appear in court to testify.

Operate electronic control rooms, control panels and video monitors.

Operate County vehicle, computers and standard office equipment.

Work rotating shifts, weekends and holidays; available for overtime, weekends and holidays as needed.

Follow Sheriff’s Office policies, code of conduct and operational principles.

Perform additional duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Law enforcement and corrections principles, procedures, techniques and equipment.

County policies, procedures and methods.

Operate a County vehicle in normal and adverse conditions.

Read, learn and understand applicable federal, state and local laws.

Complete in‑service/mandatory training.

Operate a firearm in emergency situations and qualify as needed.

Physically subdue and control unruly and resisting individuals.

Pass established annual physical testing.

Remain calm and respond appropriately to emergency and/or threatening situations.

Operate computers and commonly used software programs.

Work rotating shifts, weekends and holidays.

Apply sound reasoning and decision‑making.

Communicate effectively in verbal and written English.

Maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, detention staff, inmates, court officials, suspects, witnesses, other law enforcement officials, contractors and the general public.

Minimum Qualifications

High School graduate or GED equivalent.

No specific experience required, or equivalent combination of education and experience approved by the Sheriff.

21 years of age.

Valid Driver’s License (Colorado license may be required).

Ability to legally possess a handgun.

Ability to complete a Colorado POST Academy and obtain certification.

Must be able to work rotating shifts, weekends and holidays.

Physical Demands 90% standing/walking/running, 10% sitting in booking area. Carry 150 lbs. Push, pull, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, handle, restrain combos. Voice, audio, visual, fine/gross motor and olfactory capabilities for firearm, office, field equipment, control panels and video monitoring.
