Primary Purpose Of Organizational Unit The UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy is one of six health science schools at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. It teaches approximately 600 PharmD students and 145 graduate students, and was named the number one School of Pharmacy in the U.S. by U.S. News and World Report.
Position Summary Synthetic organic chemist position focused on the design and construction of novel molecules toward first-in-class chemical tools and preclinical lead molecules. The post-doctoral scholar will be responsible for the design, construction and characterization of novel heterocyclic molecules possessing improved potency and selectivity. For each project we have partnered with leading external research experts to facilitate the interrogation of the compound’s biological activity, dedicated to the development of new synthetic methods and routes to the target scaffolds and their application to construct new high‑impact molecules.
Duties
Perform research in synthetic organic chemistry (75%). The primary duty is to design and carry out experiments leading to the synthesis of biologically relevant molecules, including literature searches, maintaining the laboratory, safety protocol compliance, detailed record‑keeping, data interpretation and experimental design.
Active participation in scientific group meetings, departmental seminars, and problem sessions (10%).
Contribute to the preparation and submission of reports, patents and publications related to research (15%).
Independently write experimental sections of papers and assist in all aspects of the publication process.
Report results at national scientific meetings.
Minimum Education And Experience Requirements PhD in organic chemistry, or related discipline.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, And Experience
Strong organic synthesis skills (total synthesis and/or method development).
Research productivity as evidenced by peer‑reviewed publications.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, And Experience
Experience with a wide range of purification techniques such as flash chromatography, HPLC, distillation, etc.
Previous collaborative research experience.
Experience in the construction of heterocyclic molecules.
Extensive familiarity with NMR acquisition and spectral analysis.
Special Physical/Mental Requirements Strict adherence to all environmental health and safety rules and best practices, including proper use of full personal protective equipment.
