Geologist 5 - Mineral Resources Section Chief (PCN 10-2046)
Alaska State Troopers, Anchorage, Alaska, United States, 99507
Overview
The Department of Natural Resources, Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys, is recruiting for a Geologist 5. Duty station: Fairbanks (preferred) or Anchorage. Final location set upon selection. What You Will Be Doing
Are you an experienced geologist and manager who is passionate about assessing and developing Alaska’s mineral resources consistent with the public interest? The Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys (DGGS) is seeking a Section Chief for our Mineral Resources group, which collects, analyzes, and publishes new information on the geology of Alaska. These datasets promote economic development and sound management of Alaska’s mineral resources. This position provides administrative, supervisory, and technical leadership for the section, as well as scientific and operational leadership and oversight of projects related to economic geology, petrology, ore deposit models, and geophysics. This position further serves as a geoscience advisor to the Alaska Executive Branch and Legislature, and other agencies and organizations on Alaska mineral industry and resource topics. Mission and Values/Culture
DGGS’ mission is to determine the potential of Alaskan land for the production of metals, minerals, fuels, and geothermal resources. Alaska is a successful competitor for global investment dollars targeting oil and gas and mineral resources, and the state compares favorably to other mineral mining jurisdictions around the world (2024 Fraser Institute rankings of 1st in the Best Practices Mineral Potential Index and 3rd in the Investment Attractiveness Index among global jurisdictions). This position directly facilitates the success of Alaska’s geological database, which was ranked first among U.S. states by the Fraser Institute in 2024. (Fraser Institute Annual Survey of Mining Companies, 2024) Benefits of Joining Our Team
This role leads a group of talented geoscientists and will represent the agency as a subject matter expert, speak at conferences and interface with exploration companies in search of opportunities in Alaska, as well as have the option of joining the team’s geological mapping fieldwork. DGGS offers ample opportunity for on-the-job training, a very flexible work schedule, possible telework, and partnership with dedicated colleagues who are passionate about their work and the mission of the division. DGGS prioritizes a respectful and inclusive workplace. The incumbent in this position is critical to the functioning of the geological survey, as they provide essential support to the section’s project managers and scientists in fulfilling their areas of DGGS’ mission. The position currently supervises 13 employees. The Working Environment You Can Expect
