Overview The University of Virginia Comprehensive Cancer Center seeks an experienced laboratory technician/specialist with expertise in investigating new investigational therapies in small animal (murine) models.

Responsibilities Responsibilities include:

Conducing in vivo drug studies in cancer xenograft mouse models (subcutaneous and orthotopic).

Administering drugs via intravenous and intraperitoneal injections.

Drawing blood for analytical studies; performing necropsy and tissue sampling; sample preparation/analysis for downstream assays (immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry, Western blot, qPCR, RNAseq).

Working with other species (rats and dogs) and writing/managing animal care protocols (beneficial but not required).

Investigating drug effects on cells in tissue culture and studying mechanisms of action of drugs/biologics in in vitro cancer models.

Familiarity with advanced molecular techniques (CRISPR, gene expression studies, confocal microscopy, and other molecular assays) is highly encouraged; lack of experience with these techniques is not exclusionary.

About the Laboratory The candidate will be integrated into a well-funded, world-class laboratory with over 30 years of experience in state-of-the-art research and drug discovery focused on blood cancers. The position reports to Owen A. O’Connor, M.D., Ph.D., in the Department of Medicine, Division of Hematologic Oncology.

Minimum Requirements Laboratory and Research Technician 2

Education:

Associate's degree

Experience:

At least 2 years of lab experience (may include student experience). A Bachelor's degree in a related science will be considered in lieu of experience.

Lab Specialist

Education:

Bachelor's degree

Experience:

2 years of experience. Four years of lab-related experience may be accepted in lieu of a degree.

Physical Demands This position may involve extensive standing and squatting during experiments or animal care, and requires keyboarding and other bench work as well as fine motor dexterity for animal procedures.

Compensation and Benefits Salary will be commensurate with education and experience. This is a non-exempt, benefited position. Learn more about UVA benefits. This is a restricted position dependent on funding and funding availability.
