Job Summary This is law enforcement, crime prevention, and public assistance work protecting life and property through the enforcement of Federal, State and Local laws. Employees in this classification are involved in the prevention, detection and investigation of crimes and maintaining law and order. Positions allocated to this classification report to a designated supervisor and work under limited supervision. The work is distinguished by its emphasis on public protection.

Essential Job Functions

Patrols a designated area by vehicle or foot and remains familiar with the assigned area and residents.

Disperses unruly crowds at public gatherings.

Reports hazards or abandoned vehicles to the appropriate City department.

Uses a computer to type reports and other documents.

Directs or reroutes traffic around accidents, fires and other emergencies and hazards.

Maintains assigned equipment and work station.

Interacts effectively with the public and applies applicable laws, policies and directives.

Participates in court-related processes as required.

Conducts criminal and crash investigations; secures scenes and collects evidence.

Conducts interviews, interrogations and statement acquisition; participates in searches, seizures and arrests.

Performs security and escort duties; responds to emergencies as needed.

May be assigned desk officer duties, including logs, records, complaints and dispatch facilitation.

Attends work on a continuous and regular basis.

Non-Essential Functions

May train police recruits and certified officers in assigned areas.

May enforce drug policy based on location and structure.

May supervise employees in safety-sensitive functions and handle information related to investigations.

May transport or handle hazardous materials or work with facilities/equipment carrying electrical or other hazards.

Other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications Education and Experience

High School Diploma or GED required; may include related work or volunteer experience in lieu of work history.

Certifications and Licenses

Valid State of Florida Driver License with a good driving record at appointment.

U.S. citizenship required; age 19 by application date; able to meet health, physical, psychological and background standards.

No felony or felony-related convictions; cannabis and illicit drug use history must meet stated standards.

Florida Department of Law Enforcement, Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission Basic Law Enforcement Certification at appointment.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of Florida Statutes and City ordinances; knowledge of City geography.

Skill in use and care of firearms, police vehicles and equipment.

Ability to communicate effectively, analyze situations, and act under stress; maintain reports and confidentiality.

Working knowledge of computers and relevant software; ability to work with coworkers and the public.

Physical and Environmental Requirements

Must meet physical fitness standards to perform essential duties.

Work may involve heavy traffic and outdoor conditions; environment varies by location.
