This is law enforcement, crime prevention, and public assistance work protecting life and property through the enforcement of Federal, State and Local laws. Employees in this classification are involved in the prevention, detection and investigation of crimes and maintaining law and order. Positions allocated to this classification report to a designated supervisor and work under limited supervision. Work in this class is distinguished from other classes by its emphasis on public protection. Responsibilities
Patrols a designated area either by vehicle or foot patrol and stay familiar with the assigned area and residents. Disperse unruly crowds at public gatherings and report hazards or abandoned vehicles. Use a computer to type reports and other documents; direct or reroute traffic around accidents or hazards; maintain equipment and work station. Interact effectively with the public; apply federal, state and local laws, policies, and directives; participate in court-related processes. Conduct criminal and crash investigations; secure scenes and collect evidence; conduct interviews and statements; participate in searches, seizures, and arrests. Render first aid and respond to emergency conditions; issue warnings or tickets; may serve as desk officer on a shift and maintain logs and records. Attend work on a continuous and regular basis. Qualifications
Education And Experience Must meet one of the following: High School Diploma or GED. Include work experience (cumulative) of at least one year; previous community service/volunteer service may be considered in lieu of work experience. Certifications Or Licenses Valid State of Florida Driver License required at time of appointment with a good driving record. U.S. citizen, age 19 by application date, and able to meet health, physical, psychological and background standards. No felony or disqualifying misdemeanor convictions; cannabis-free in the past 12 months and drug-free in the past 36 months. Florida Department of Law Enforcement, Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission’s Basic Law Enforcement Certification required at appointment. Knowledge, Skills And Abilities Knowledge of Florida Statutes and City ordinances; knowledge of city geography; skills in firearms handling and police equipment; strong communication and report-writing abilities; ability to handle high-stress situations and maintain confidentiality; working knowledge of computers and relevant software; ability to work effectively with coworkers and the public. Physical And Environmental Requirements Maintain physical fitness to perform essential duties; work may involve heavy traffic, outdoor conditions, and varying climates.
