Overview

Special Education Support Professional - CBT at Tacoma Public Schools. Expected Start Date: As Soon As Possible. FTE: 0.8125. Hours per day: 6.5. Salary Levels: PA4H ($27.56) - No degree; PA4J ($28.31) - AA degree; PA4K ($28.56) - BA/BS or higher. Benefits: full range of benefits offered by Tacoma Public Schools. Union/Days per year: Education Support Professional, 183 workdays, 10-month. Additional Information:

This position requires completion and attainment of the state mandated General Paraeducator Certificate. The Paraeducator Certificate Program offers statewide standards-based training and supports a career growth ladder for paraeducators or those pursuing teaching professions. District training requirements include 28 hours of training on the Fundamental Course of Study (FCS); the first two days of FCS within four months of hire, and the second two days within six months of hire (or by September 1 of the next school year). A general certificate is earned after completing ten days (70 clock hours) of professional development. Responsibilities

Provide instruction to students individually or in small groups per the direction of the teacher; assist with activities of daily living and with students who have sensory or physical handicaps; promote a safe learning environment; support vocational training and job-hunting skills as assigned; encourage participation in learning activities. Assist with self-care activities as needed; may include feeding, dressing, toileting, diapering, and related tasks; monitor and assist during health-related activities as trained; support students with adaptive equipment and sign language as needed. Supervise students during recess, lunch, bus loading/unloading; assist bus drivers with student support; may transport students as needed within the school or building. Record student progress on data sheets and logs; communicate with teachers and families as assigned; assist in assessing students and maintaining records related to IEP goals, behavioral plans, and academic progress. Adjust student positioning for comfort and safety; implement occupational/physical therapy activities as instructed; use adaptive equipment and teach basic sign language as appropriate; ensure safety at all times. Prepare and serve meals/snacks; maintain cleanliness of eating areas; model positive behavior; reinforce appropriate conflict resolution; implement District guidelines for discipline. Assist in adapting materials and activities; assist in administering standardized tests as assigned; use computer software and adaptive equipment to meet needs of students with disabilities; arrange classroom setup for activities; accompany students on field trips or off-site activities as needed; may supervise students in general education classes. Participate in department staff meetings and provide information regarding students; coordinate and maintain equipment for student use. Demonstrate reliable attendance and comply with District policies on tardiness and absences; address concerns with appropriate staff and administrators as appropriate. Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience:

Associate degree or 72 credit hours of post-secondary education or passing state test to demonstrate knowledge and ability to assist in instruction; plus one year of experience with individuals who have special needs or related combination of experience and training. Licenses/Special Requirements:

CPR/First Aid certification or willingness to be trained within 90 days; must attend District restraint training and maintain certification; may require cleansing intermittent catheterization (CIC) training; fingerprints and successful WSP/FBI background clearance; sexual misconduct clearance. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of disabilities and applicable teaching methods; ability to maintain confidentiality; conflict de-escalation; strong communication and interpersonal skills; ability to lift up to 25 pounds and, with assistance, up to 50 pounds; ability to work in inclement weather and with diverse populations; ability to support students with personal care needs and restraints as necessary.
