The City of Bend Police Department is actively seeking qualified Lateral Officer applicants to join our team as Police Officers. This selection process will create an eligibility list for future vacancies. Bend is a vibrant city of over 106,000 residents, committed to community policing and innovation. Starting Salary: $87,857.52 up to $114,668 (with Advanced DPSST certification)
Uniforms and Gear: Supplied.
Work Schedule: 11.25-hour shifts, four days on and four days off.

Educational Reimbursements: Available.
Incentives: Walking, biking, or carpooling to work; moving expenses reimbursement up to $2,000.
Additional Benefits: As noted in the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
Community Enhancement Program: Additional 2% to gross wages.
Language Fluency: $1.50 per hour increase for fluency in languages other than English (as approved by the Chief of Police).
Veterans: VA on-the-job training program available.
Lateral Opportunities
For experienced lateral candidates who are certified officers and have completed their agency's Field Training, we offer competitive wages and incentives. Pay steps and incentives are outlined below. Pay Step 2: $7,321.46 (6–18 months solo officer experience)
Pay Step 3: $7,687.54 (18–30 months solo officer experience)
Pay Step 4: $8,071.82 (30–42 months solo officer experience)
Pay Step 5: $8,475.52 (42+ months solo officer experience)
Lateral Officers may earn up to an additional 10% or 15% premium pay (depending on DPSST qualifications).
Out-of-state reciprocity for certifications is available and guidance is provided.
Key Duties
The following duties provide a representative summary of major responsibilities and are not exhaustive. Incumbents may perform additional duties. Carries out the agency mission and models core values.
As a first responder, acts as a liaison between the department and the public; respond to incidents, investigate, patrol, engage in information-led policing, and make decisions to deter crime. May be assigned to specialized units.
Serve arrest and search warrants; direct traffic; patrol during incidents or emergencies.
Investigate crashes, complete reports, make arrests or issue citations, render first aid.
Conduct investigations, interview witnesses and suspects, collect evidence; testify in court; participate in meetings and training.
Book and transport prisoners; assist other agencies; complete reports and follow-up investigations.
Provide public assistance; follow safety requirements; respond to emergencies as directed.
Operate police equipment and vehicles; apply defensive tactics; pursue safety, health, and public service standards.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of law enforcement techniques, applicable laws and ordinances, court procedures, evidence and report-writing.
Knowledge of departmental policies, investigative techniques, and safety practices.
Ability to operate firearms and various police equipment; perform first aid; conduct interviews and crime scene processing.
Ability to communicate effectively, write clear reports, and interact with diverse populations.
Ability to work varied shifts, lift heavy gear, and maintain physical fitness for performance of duties.
Ability to use police computer systems and learn department resources; maintain situational awareness during high-stress events.
Qualifications
Minimum qualifications include: 21 years or older; completion of a law enforcement field training program or one year probationary experience as a full-time sworn officer; recent employment as a full-time sworn officer within the last five years; ability to obtain DPSST certification and reciprocity if applicable; equivalent education and experience to perform essential duties. Ability to pass a comprehensive background check; valid driver’s license; ability to obtain CJIS certification.
Work Environment
Work in a 24-hour environment with varied shifts, exposed to weather, traffic, and potentially dangerous conditions. Physical demands include lifting, running, restraining, and long periods of surveillance. Application Details
