Department Overview The Research Assistant 2 position in a breast cancer research laboratory focused on immunohistochemical (IHC) methods for biomarker assessment, data capture and quantitative analyses. While expertise in routine histology procedures is preferred, on the job training to acquire and expand on IHC skills will be provided. The applicant is expected to be self-starting, dependable, detail-oriented, organized and work well in teams. They must show initiative to identify and implement improvements to the job and surroundings. They are expected to plan work in a manner that allows completion of duties in a timely manner, seeking supervision and advice when appropriate, and should be able to prioritize their assignments based on need. The applicant is expected to work closely with students and fellows in training, as well as be a resource for all lab members including assisting with experimental design, execution, and data interpretation.

Function/Duties of Position

Assist with sequential IHC data acquisition, analysis, and presentation using image analysis software like Matlab, ImageJ, FCS Express, Aperio etc.

Prepare and stain slides for immunohistochemistry of specimens for research data. Perform histological techniques (i.e. embedding and H&E staining) on human and murine tissue sections and tissue cultures.

Assist lab members with other research related duties including but not limited to tissue acquisition and inventory, animal husbandry, and regulatory documentation as needed.

Perform general lab duties (i.e. cleaning and autoclaving laboratory glassware, preparing solutions, ordering, and stocking items).

Maintain a lab notebook and be responsive to time-sensitive requests associated with manuscripts, grants, meetings, i.e. be flexible and helpful.

Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's in relevant field; OR

Associate's AND 3 years of relevant experience; OR

4 years of relevant experience; OR

Equivalent combination of training and experience.

Knowledge of histological/immunohistochemical techniques.

Solid qualitative and analytical skills.

Excellent written and oral communication.

Strong computer skills, including experience using the Microsoft Office suite.

The ideal candidate will be a team player who demonstrates a highly motivated attitude, reliability, attention to detail and willingness to learn additional, as well as self-identify areas for improvement.

Preferred Qualifications

3+ months of recent experience in a research or clinical laboratory.

Familiarity/experience performing immunohistochemical and special stains.

Familiarity/experience with Matlab or other coding software or image analysis software.

Additional Details Work is generally 40 hours per week during normal working hours, but some evening and weekend work will be necessary on occasion. The laboratory handles human tissue.
