Job Title Senior Center Bus Driver (Per Diem)

Starting Salary $27.09/hr

Function Under the direction of the Senior Center Director and/or Assistant Senior Center Director, provides safe, reliable and timely transportation to senior and disabled residents. Assists with regular custodial duties.

Responsibilities

Provides curb‑to‑curb transportation for passengers within Berlin, New Britain and surrounding towns. Remains at passenger’s destination until passenger has safely entered facility.

Occasionally transports passengers on recreational outings to destinations beyond Berlin and New Britain.

Maintains regular contact with Senior Center by cell phone to keep abreast of schedule changes.

Consistently exhibits pleasant demeanor and active listening skills during interactions with passengers and staff.

Complies with daily vehicle safety inspection requirements. Completes transportation reports following each shift.

Safely operates wheelchair lift and properly secures wheelchairs into vehicle.

Notifies Senior Center Director or Assistant Director promptly of any issues as they pertain to vehicles, maintenance, safety, equipment and passengers. Immediately notifies Senior Center Director of incidents and accidents.

Refuels vehicles at conclusion of each shift.

Maintains cleanliness of interior and exterior of vehicle at all times. Clears snow and ice from vehicles as necessary and ensures windows are free of snow and ice.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Special Skills & Requirements High school diploma or equivalent. Valid Connecticut Driver’s License with Class F Endorsement required (includes DOT Medical Examiner Certification). Must possess safe driving record with considerable driving/transportation experience. First Aid/CPR certification preferred. Ability to relate positively to older adults, staff members, town officials and general public. Demonstrates flexibility to schedule changes. Ability to read and write English and understand directions is essential.

Job Environment Most of the work is done within the confines of the Senior Center transportation vehicles and the Senior Center itself. Work requires some physical exertion such as standing, walking, entering and exiting vehicles numerous times a day, and lifting moderately heavy items weighing less than 25 pounds. Frequent interface with elderly citizens of town.
