Provides supervision and direct care for youth in a residential correctional facility. Helps youth progress in learning to identify and manage stress and trauma, and to respond in socially appropriate ways. Uses intervention methods to address behavioral issues and maintains safe environments with security measures when needed. Engages with youth with awareness of brain development in youth with complex trauma, maintains healthy relationships and boundaries, and recognizes youth progress. Work involves facilitating youth rehabilitation, supervising youth, and coaching their personal development per individualized treatment plans. May work assigned shifts, be on-call, and work over 40 hours per week. Occasional travel may be required. Career Ladder Promotion Opportunity : This position is in the TJJD career ladder for Juvenile Correctional Officers. Salaries adjust with ladder steps per policy until the top level is reached. Placement and progression depend on experience, education, and performance. Pre-Service Training Academy Requirement : Newly hired or rehired JCOs who have been separated more than 18 months must attend a pre-service training academy and complete on-the-job training full-time. JCOs returning within 18 months are not required to attend the academy and will be placed in full-time status on their date of employment. Levels of Work / Career Ladder
Juvenile Correctional Officer II: journey-level under general supervision. Juvenile Correctional Officer III: extensive journey-level under general supervision. Juvenile Correctional Officer IV: senior-level under limited supervision with greater autonomy. ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Engage in competency-based training in trauma-informed corrections; hold youth accountable and help them learn appropriate responses; assess safety risks and apply higher levels of intervention when needed; assist youth in identifying stress responses and improving emotional self-regulation; model self-regulation and remain calm during crises; support youths’ treatment plans; participate in Youth Service Team and contribute to treatment planning; maintain a predictable schedule and adapt as needed with transparency; monitor activities and ensure healthy youth engagement; observe and report significant behavioral and treatment-related conditions; provide services to youth with diverse needs; physically restrain when necessary and participate in debriefings; maintain facility security and intervene during emergencies; conduct searches for contraband and health hazards; supervise youth in all daily activities; ensure privacy of records; complete and maintain required records; perform related duties; comply with safety policies and procedures, reporting hazards and documenting incidents. Attends work on a regular and predictable schedule; travel up to 25% of the time; embody and support the Texas Model values. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Must be at least 21 years old and have a high school diploma or equivalent. OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
College degree or coursework; experience supervising or providing rehabilitation/treatment services to youth or adults in a treatment/correctional/residential setting. Note: any degree or coursework must be from an accredited institution. Applicants with certain disqualifications are not considered; others may be reviewed case-by-case. Pre-employment conditions include drug test, fingerprinting, criminal records check, driving record check, and Fitness-for-Duty Assessment. Continued employment requires certification in TJJD Use of Force techniques and in First Aid/CPR. PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
Typical physical demands include effective communication, vision and hearing, lifting up to 45 lbs, restraining youth, pushing/pulling, bending, standing/walking, climbing stairs, climbing ladders, dexterity, and travel between locations; accommodations available as needed.
